Ben Walker joined the South Dakota State University men’s basketball coaching staff in April 2016, bringing with him playing and coaching experience at a variety of levels. He is in his third year with the program.
Known for his high character, work ethic and ability to recruit on a national level, Walker has been crucial in the Jackrabbits’ success over the last two seasons, helping the team reach consecutive NCAA Tournaments with back-to-back Summit League automatic bids.
Walker also worked closely with Mike Daum, who is a two-time Summit League Player of the Year and Associated Press All-American.
Walker spent the 2015-16 season as an assistant coach at Jackson State (Miss.) for a program that posted a 20-16 record and made a postseason appearance in the College Insider Tournament. He previously coached in the junior college ranks, winning conference titles and making national tournament appearances at both Des Moines Area Community College (Iowa) and Butler Community College (Kan.).
As a player at Creighton from 1997 to 2001, his teams reached the postseason every year and posted an 87-37 record in that time. In the Creighton record book, Walker ranks in the top 10 for steals and rebounds after starting 119 games (with 124 appearances) in a Bluejay uniform. Walker was named to the Missouri Valley All-Defensive Team and helped the Bluejays reached the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) and three straight NCAA Tournaments.
He later embarked on a professional playing experience with overseas stints in Qatar, Latvia, Australia and Norway. In Latvia, he was an All-Star selection and Most Valuable Player in 2005. Walker also had appearances with the Sioux Falls Skyforce and Gary Steelheads of the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) and tryouts with the Milwaukee Bucks and Indiana Pacers of the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Walker was inducted into the Creighton University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010.
Walker currently resides in Brookings, South Dakota, with his wife, Jana, and their children, sons Ben Jr., and Kobe, and daughter London.
