LINCOLN, Neb. - Nebraska pitchers shutout South Dakota State on five hits as the third-ranked Cornhuskers swept a baseball doubleheader 10-0 and 3-0 Friday at Hawks Field.
The Jacks had two hits in the opener and three hits in the nitecap.
Nebraska is now 15-2 with a ten game win streak while SDSU dropped to 2-10. The teams will play another doubleheader Saturday, with Sundays scheduled game cancelled because of pending inclement weather.
In game one, Bryce Nimmo went 3-for-3 with a home run and Nick Jaros added three hits and three RBIs to help the Nebraska baseball team roll to a 10-0 victory over South Dakota State in the first game.
In a game shortened to seven innings by the ten-run-rule, the Huskers pounded 11 hits in support of a strong outing from starting pitcher Tony Watson. The sophomore left-hander scattered two hits and struck out six to improve 3-0 on the season.
Nimmo and Jaros combined for six hits, five runs scored and four RBIs in the top two spots in Nebraska's batting order. The duo set the tone from the start, as Nimmo reached on a bunt single, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error before Jaros sent a sacrifice fly to right field for the game's first run.
In game two, redshirt freshman Charlie Shirek needed only 67 pitches to become the first Husker in seven years to fire a complete game shutout. Shirek (1-0) struck out three and allowed only three singles over seven frames, picking up his first career victory in a game that lasted just 79 minutes.
SDSUs five hits , all singles, were by five different players: Brian Estes and Kasey Keller in the opener; Nick Adams, Cal Lewis and Chris Iverson in the nitecap.
