BROOKINGS, S.D. ? South Dakota State kicked off the holiday break in style Friday night, and kicked off its first win streak of the season in the process, with a 65-62 win over Montana State in front of 2,021 Frost Arena faithful.
The Bobcats came out hot from beyond the arc in the first half, going 9-of-13 from three-point range, (69.2 percent) compared to the Jackrabbits 0-for-6 effort.
Despite that difference, the Jacks hung tough, stuck to their game and after seven first half lead changes and three ties, went into the locker room down only six points. Danny Piepoli hit a three-pointer just before the buzzer to give the Bobcats a 36-30 halftime lead.
The Jacks continued to trail in the second half, never by more than six points, but did tie the game four times before finally taking the lead at 55-53 with 7:47 left on a Garrett Callahan Jumper in the lane.
Montana State tied the game two more times, but the Jacks took the lead for good on a pair of Kai Williams free throws with just under a minute to go that made it 62-60.
Matt Cadwell led the Jacks with 23 points on 8-of-19 shooting, but he did go 7-for-8 from the free throw line.
Williams sat much of the game in foul trouble, but did manage to score 17 points for the second straight game, which matches a career high. He also grabbed 7 rebounds in just 24 minutes.
Callahan rounded out the double-digit scoring for the Jacks with 13 points, including two of the three Jackrabbit three-pointers.
Thomas Bassett made all three of his shots from the field for seven points. He also tallied a career high eight rebounds and a career high three steals.
As a team, the Jacks committed a season-low ten turnovers compared to the Bobcats 19, which helped make up for the deficiency from beyond the three-point line.
South Dakota State out-shot Montana State 46.2 percent (24-of-52) to 40.7 percent (22-of-54) for the game, but the Bobcats out-rebounded the Jacks 35-34.
The Jacks only shot 51.9 percent (14-of-27) from the free throw line, but MSU only went to the line eight times, making five of them (62.5 percent).
Branden Johnson led the Bobcats with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting (4-of-6 from three-point range), while Nick Dissly pitched in 15.
South Dakota State gets a week off before returning to the road for a rematch against Idaho on December 30th. The Vandals beat the Jacks 74-66 on November 16th in the Jacks home opener, but lost to Montana State at home 72-65 three days later.
