Led by true freshman Clint Sargent's career-high 18 points, South Dakota State surpassed last season's win total on Saturday night with a 66-62 win over Southern Utah in front of a season-high 3,733 Corduroy Classic Fans.
The Jackrabbits improve to 7-12 overall with the win and 2-6 in Summit League play, while the Thunderbirds fall to 4-14 overall, 2-5 in league play.
Along with his career high 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting (3-of-7, 43 percent, from three-point range), the South Sioux City, Neb., native Sargent pulled down a career-high seven rebounds.
Sophomore Kai Williams finished the night with 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting, a game-high seven rebounds and added a career-high six assists. Redshirt freshman Anthony Cordova added nine points, three rebound and a career-high three assists off the bench.
A Sargent three pointer kicked off the scoring for the Jackrabbits, who never trailed again in the first half. Southern Utah would trail by as many as seven points three times in the first half, but fought back to get within one point on a Jumper by Geoff Payne to make it 33-32 Jackrabbits at the half.
The Jacks scored to first basket of the second half on a Williams tip-in, but the T-Birds scored the next four points to take their first lead of the game at 36-35 with 17:14 to play.
The Orlando Griego basket that put SUU on top marked the first of three lead changes and a pair of ties that followed over the next four and a half minutes.
The Jacks got the lead back for good on a three-pointer by Sargent with 11:41 left that put SDSU on top 44-43.
From there, the Jacks would slowly increase their lead to as many as eight points at 63-55 with 2:28 to play.
The Thunderbirds would claw their way back into the game and get within three-points and the ball with 20 seconds on the clock, but SUU committed a costly turnover with 13 ticks remaining and the Jacks made just enough free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.
The Jackrabbits shot 50 percent from the floor in the game, and in each half (12-for 24 in the first half and 11-for-22 in the second half) while holding SUU to 44.4 percent shooting, 12-for 27 in the first half, and 38.5 percent in the second half on 10-for-26 shooting. For the game SUU shot 41.5 percent.
Geoff Payne led all players with 21 points, while Dave Marek helped out with 11.
The Jackrabbits return to action on Friday, when they travel to Fargo, N.D., to take on the Bison, who swept their weekend series with Southern Utah and UMKC.
The Bison enter Friday's game with a 10-9 overall record, 4-4 in The Summit League.
Tip-off from Bison Sports Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m.
