Jackrabbit men open 2008-09 with two home games

South Dakota State kicks off the 2008-09 season, its first with postseason eligibility at the Division I level, on Friday against San Jose State and quickly turns around to host Mayville State (N.D.) on Sunday.
The Jackrabbits first two games mark just the beginning of a rigorous early season schedule with five games in nine days.
Following the first homestand this weekend, the Jacks embark on their first road trip with games at Virginia Commonwealth on Nov. 19 and at Drake on Nov. 23. SDSU then hosts Upper Iowa on Nov. 25, before leaving for a pair of games at the Cancun Challenge on Nov. 29-30.
But the team cannot look ahead, they first need to take care of business at home this weekend, starting with the visiting Spartans, who erased a 17-point second half lead last season in San Jose to force overtime, where they eventually won 77-71.
The Western Athletic Conference coaches picked the Spartans to finish fourth in the conference, while the media picked them to finish sixth, although they did garner one first place vote in the media poll.
The WAC coaches selected junior center C.J. Webster to the All-WAC first-team, while the media placed him on the Preseason All-WAC team.
The Dakota Athletic Conference coaches picked Mayville State, who lost its first two games of the 2008-09 season, to finish seventh in the eight team DAC. The conference did not select a preseason All-DAC team.
A poll of Summit League coaches, select media and sports information directors picked the Jackrabbits to finish eighth in the ten-team league, up two spots from last year. SDSU junior forward Kai Williams also earned a spot on the preseason All-Summit League second-team.
Williams led the 2007-08 Jackrabbits with 14.0 points and with 7.8 rebounds per game. His rebounding average also ranked second in The Summit League.
RABBITS ON THE RADIO ? All Jackrabbit men's basketball games, home and on the road, can be heard on AM 570 WNAX, with Steve Imming doing the play-by-play. The pre-game show begins 15 minutes before tip-off.

San Jose State Spartans (0-0, 0-0 WAC) ? Friday's game also marks the start of the season for San Jose State, who finished the 2007-08 season with a 13-19 overall record, 4-12 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Spartans finished eighth in the conference standings and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the WAC Tournament.
Friday's game marks the third meeting between the two teams, but the first at Frost Arena. The Spartans won both of the first games, including a 76-55 win on Dec. 6, 1980 and a 77-71 overtime win last season on Dec. 30, 2007.
Mayville State Comets (0-2, 0-0 DAC) ? The Comets, who played a pair of games at the Ed Harter Classic on Friday and Saturday, opened the season with a pair of losses at the York College Classic in York, Neb.
Concordia (Neb.) beat Mayville 83-67 in the season opener on Oct. 31, while Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) came away with a 76-68 in on Nov. 1.
Through the first two games, senior guard Jake Gonzalez leads the Comets with and even 16.0 points per game, while senior forward Dave Johnson leads them with 8.0 rebounds per game.
The Jacks lead the all-time series with Mayville State 10-0, including an 87-51 win in the last meeting on Nov. 24, 2004 in Frost Arena.
