BROOKINGS, S.D. ? South Dakota State will vie for Summit League supremacy at the 2009 Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships this week in Rochester, Mich.
Both the Jackrabbit men's and women's teams will compete in the three-day meet Thursday through Saturday at the Recreation and Athletics Center on the Oakland University campus. Preliminaries begin at 11 a.m. Eastern Time each day, with event finals beginning at 6:30 p.m. each night.
Oakland will bring its streak of nine consecutive league titles in both the men's and women's divisions into the 2008-09 championship. The Golden Grizzlies were picked to repeat as champions in the preseason coaches' polls, while SDSU was picked to finish fourth in the women's division and sixth on the men's side.
Last season, SDSU finished third in the women's team race and sixth in the men's team competition.
Rounding out the six-team field are Centenary (La.), IUPUI, Western Illinois and associate member Eastern Illinois.
WOMEN'S SEASON REVIEW: The Jackrabbit women have featured a balanced lineup throughout the 2008-09 season.
Senior Mallory Onisk holds the squad's top times in the butterfly and individual medley events this season, as well as the 50- and 200-yard freestyle. Onisk set school records in the 100 butterfly (:57.79), 200 butterfly (2:05.93) and 200 individual medley (2:08.88) at the 2006 league championships.
The Jackrabbit lineup has gotten a boost from junior Katie Budahl, a Mitchell native who transferred from the University of Minnesota last fall. Budahl has re-written the Jackrabbit record books in the breaststroke events this season, clocking top times of 1:05.68 in the 100 breaststroke and 2:18.82 in the 200-yard event. Budahl will be joined in the breaststroke events by Emily Tschetter, who placed third in the 200 and fifth in the 100 at last year's championships.
Another newcomer, Rapid City native Jessica Ferley, has led SDSU in the backstroke events this season, while also holding the squad's top time in the 100 freestyle (:54.36).
In the distance freestyle events, Christina Gerometta has been the team's top performer so far, posting top times in the 500 (5:16.86), 1,000 (10:52.32) and 1,650 (18:10.51). Kayleigh Boucher, who set school records in the 1,000 and 1,650 at last year's Summit League Championship, also returns.
The Jackrabbits also expect to pick up points in diving, where they will be represented by junior Sasha Porter and freshman Breanna Torkelson. Porter ranks eighth on the league performance list in the 3-meter event with a top score of 226.60, while Torkelson ranks ninth in 1-meter (227.15) and 10th in 3-meter (220.73).
MEN'S SEASON REVIEW: The Jackrabbit men have been led this season senior Chris Holzwarth and Cade Roberts.
Holzwarth is a versatile swimmer who holds the team's top times in the 100 freestyle (:48.46), 500 freestyle (4:46.62) and 200 individual medley (1:58.63).
Roberts will attempt to regain his form from two seasons ago, when he posted respective third- and fourth-place finishes in the 200 and 100 breaststroke events at the league championship. He again has been the team's top performer in those events this season, clocking times of 1:00.20 in the 100 breaststroke and 2:12.73 in the 200. Roberts also holds the top time in the 400 individual medley, 4:22.56.
Alaska natives Jon Wendel and Matt Josephson are expected to pace the Jackrabbits in the backstroke events, while sophomore Jason Garder has had a solid sophomore season in the freestyle sprints and butterfly events.
In the distance events, senior Kyle Milleman and junior Ryan Willett both bring championship experience to the lineup.
COACH BRAD ERICKSON: SDSU head coach Brad Erickson is in his 33rd season as the head coach of the Jackrabbit men's and women's swimming teams.
Since being named head swimming coach in 1976, Erickson has coached the Jackrabbit men to a North Central Conference championship in 1979 and the SDSU women to an NCC title in 1981. In the 2000-01 season he was named the NCC Men's Swimming Coach of the Year after leading SDSU to a fourth-place finish at the conference meet.
In the fall of 2002, Erickson was honored with SDSU's Ralph Ginn Award for Coaching Excellence, which honors an SDSU alumnus in the field of education and coaching.
A 1974 graduate of South Dakota State, Erickson became the first SDSU swimmer to
compete in the NCAA Division II Championships, as a junior. The Arlington, S.D., native won three North Central Conference titles, winning the 200-yard breaststroke twice and the 100-yard breaststroke once.
Erickson has continued to represent SDSU at NCAA swimming championships during his coaching career, serving as a meet official and judge at the Division I women's and men's championships since 1982. He also has served as the Division II Championships coordinator since 1996 and is a past member of the NCAA Swimming Committee.
He is assisted by fifth-year assistant coach Phil Hurley and second-year diving coach Amie Buoy.
