Nagy opening statement vs. Southern Utah
For whatever reason, Thursday's have always been a little
bit flat for us. Just the energy
in the building and all that. Just like the IPFW game, we weren't very sharp in
the first half and then we played in the second half. We shot 52 percent in the
first half and were up three, then you know something is wrong. It's because
they (Southern Utah) shot 50 percent and we turned the ball over eight times.
We just didn't take very good care of the ball. In the second half we played
great defense, rebounded the ball and that was the difference.
Garrett Callahan Top 10 in scoring
I've said this before, he moved into the top 10 in scoring against the best players we've ever played against at South Dakota State. I think that it's a tremendous accomplishment. He's been struggling as of late. He came into to see me this week and we had a really good talk. He got some things off of his chest. I knew that he would play a lot better. He just had a lighter step to him this week and I knew he was going to play good tonight. What he and Kai have done in particular and that stats that they have put up against the best competition South Dakota State has ever played against, I think has been way understated.
Garrett having trouble coming off the bench?
I don't think so. He's handled it well. I don't think that was it at all.
Defense
We just didn't have any energy and they had the pace of the game that way that they wanted it. Then in the second half, we got some steals and some things going. They've struggled taking care of the ball. There guards are so young, so we tried to pressure them more then we pressure other teams. We forced 20 turnovers tonight, so we did a good job there. We were out in passing lanes a little bit more than we normally are and got some things going in the second half.
Most Summit League wins in school history
I guess I am kind of passed all the milestones and stuff like that. I didn't even think about that until you said it. We are where we need to be now in terms of being able to be competitive in every game. For the first time, I know going into every game, it feels like I used to feel where we are going to be competitive and play. It's been a long time since I have felt like that, but I feel that way now with our basketball team.
Offensive play
I was because of defense and rebounding. We got some steals, got some easy shots. They missed shots, we were able to run.
Post play
That's what we need. We need less three's and more inside play. That's the way our really good teams have done it. That's the way we want to do it is go inside, out. Anthony looked like he had a much better pace to him tonight and I think that helped Mark (Engen) also do better. Mark did a nice job tonight too.
