LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Arkansas-Little Rock scored three times in the bottom of the ninth inning to pull out a 14-13 victory over South Dakota State in non-conference baseball action Tuesday night.
UALR improved to 9-3 overall, while the Jackrabbits dropped to 0-7 overall.
Trailing 13-11, Myles Parma was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the ninth and later scored on a triple by Sean Bignall. Greg Garcia's single up the middle scored Bignall with the tying run. After a walk to Nick Rountree, both runners moved up on a wild pitch and Bryson Thionnet followed with his third hit of the game, the game-winning single down the left-field line.
The Jackrabbits got off to a quick start, opening the scoring with the first batter of the game as Zach Rhodes led off the contest with a home run. Daniel Telford added a solo shot to lead off the second and Rhodes plated another run with a double. A run-scoring groundout by Daniel Marra plated the third run of the inning to give SDSU a 4-1 lead.
UALR countered with a four-run third inning to grab a 5-4 lead, then tacked on another run in the fourt.
SDSU scored a run without a hit in the fifth inning, then knotted the game at 8-all with a three-run sixth. Phil Paquette double in the first two runs and Telford added a run-scoring single.
The Jackrabbits grabbed an 11-8 lead in the seventh as Rhodes recorded his third extra-base hit of the game, a two-run double to left center. Rhodes later scored on a base hit by Daniel Marra.
UALR got two back in the seventh before Rhodes, who was 4-for-6, notched his fifth RBI of the game with a base hit in the eighth.
Again the Trojans responded with a run in the eighth and SDSU tallied a run in the top of ninth when Daniel Telford doubled to lead off the frame and scored on Nick Andrews' base hit.
The Jackrabbits recorded a season-high 20 hits as Telford went 4-for-4 and Andrew Melton added a 4-for-6 effort at the plate.
Shane Kraemer took the loss in relief for the Jackrabbits despite striking out four in 2 1/3 innings. Freshman Ty Walker started for SDSU, allowing five runs and three walks in 2 2/3 innings. Austin Busse fanned five batters and gave up five runs in 3 2/3 innings.
Austin Pfeiffer earned the victory in relief for the Trojans.
The two squads close out their two-game series Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m.
