PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Adam Bray struck out five in a complete-game effort and Scott Splett drove in a pair of runs to lead the South Dakota State University baseball team opened play at the Snowbird Invitational with a 4-1 victory over Presbyterian (S.C.) Friday afternoon.
The Jackrabbits improved to 7-5 overall, while Presbyterian dropped to 5-7-1.
The Blue Hose struck first, scoring a run in the top of the fourth inning. Brad Zebedis singled with one out, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored two batters later on a base hit by Brandon Paul.
SDSU gained the lead with a three-run bottom of the sixth. Paul Jacobson led off the inning with a single and later scored on a base hit by Reid Clary. Cody Sharrow followed with the go-ahead hit, a single that brought home Al Robbins. Splett plated the final run of the inning against Presbyterian starter Beau Dees with a bases-loaded walk.
Splett drove in the final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth with a two-out double to center field that scored Zach Coppola. Splett, Jacobson, Robbins and Clary each tallied two of the Jackrabbits' 10 hits.
Bray, a junior from Eden Prairie, Minn., allowed only four hits and did not walk a batter in improving to 3-1 on the season. The right-hander surrendered only one hit after the fourth inning.
Dees struck out six and walked three in suffering his first loss of the season. Paul was 3-for-3 for the Blue Hose, but the rest of the team managed only one hit.
SDSU continues play at the Snowbird Invitational with a matchup Saturday against Maine. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. Eastern Time (2 p.m. Central).
