BROOKINGS — In a meet not decided until the final race, the University of Northern Iowa edged South Dakota State, 151-149, in a women's swimming dual Friday afternoon at the Stanley J. Marshall HPER Center Pool.
Senior Olivia Olesiak set a school record in 1-meter diving to lead the Jackrabbits in their first home dual of the season. A native of Wyoming, Minnesota, Olesiak recorded a score of 256.88 points over six dives, breaking Erin Eagen's previous record of 253.60., set in 2011.
Olesiak also placed second on the 3-meter board with a score of 245.18.
In the swimming events, Kristin Erf was a two-time winner for SDSU as she swept the breaststroke events. A sophomore from Oakdale, Minnesota, Erf won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1 minute, 5.49 seconds, and later claimed the 200-yard race in 2:24.38. She also finished second in the 200 individual medley and teamed with Sam Prasher, Kayce Smith and Abby Zenner for a victory in the meet-opening 200 medley relay with a time of 1:46.98.
Prasher, Smith and Zenner also were individual event winners for the Jackrabbits. Prasher claimed the 100 backstroke in 59.22 seconds, with Smith taking first in the 200 IM (2:12.10) and posting a runner-up finish in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.85).
Zenner's victory came in the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.54 seconds. Freshman Richelle Bruyckere made it a sweep of the top spot in the butterfly events as she touched first in the 200 butterfly (2:09.41) to go along with a runner-up time of 59.65 seconds in the 100 fly.
UNI trailed by seven points going into the final event of the day, the 400 freestyle relay, but the Panther quartet of Molly Lembezeder, Crystal Florman, Aftin Phyfe and Rachel Sibenaller won the relay and UNI's B-relay squad finished third to pull out the two-point victory.
Lembezeder (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle) and Sibenaller (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle) each won two individual events to pace the Panthers.
