South Dakota State's bid for a third NCAA Tournament in four years came up just short, but the Jackrabbits did earn The Summit League's automatic bid to the National Invitation Tournament, giving them four straight postseason appearances in as many years.
The Jacks fourth straight postseason bid marks their first in the NIT, and follows NCAA Tournament appearances in both 2012 and 2013, along with a bid in the College Basketball Invitational in 2014.
SDSU (23-10) earned a share of The Summit League regular season title with a 12-4 record, but earned the NIT automatic bid by earning the No. 1 seed in The Summit League Championship. The Jacks earned a No. 8 seed in the NIT.
Despite finishing the season with an RPI of 30, CSU (27-6) earned an at-large bid to the NIT, and a No. 1 seed as a result of being one of the “first four out” of the NCAA Tournament. The Rams finished third in the Mountain West Conference, one game behind both San Diego State and Boise State.
THE OPPONENT
COLORADO STATE RAMS (22-9, 12-4 Summit): Picked to finish fifth in the Mountain West Preseason Poll, the Rams finished third in the regular season with a 13-5 record, a game behind preseason favorite San Diego State and preseason No. 2 pick Boise State in the final standings.
The Rams lost in the semifinals of the Mountain West Conference tournament to San Diego State, and despite their 30 RPI, did not make the NCAA Tournament, which makes them the highest-rated team excluded from the NCAA tournament field since the league expanded the championship in 2011.
