SIOUX FALLS – South Dakota State swimming and diving finished day one of the South Dakota Quad-Duals Friday night at the Midco Aquatic Center in Sioux Falls, seeing seven first-place finishes.
Along with SDSU, the teams competing in the event include USD, St. Cloud State and Western Illinois, as well as the Northern Iowa women's team.
"It's was a fun first day," said head coach
Doug Humphrey. "We competed as a team today. There were a lot of close races with many season-best performances. Mitch Raihle qualified for NCAA Zones and
Emily Pincus lit up the pool with some fantastic wins."
Through day one, the women defeated USD 121.5-120.5 and St. Cloud 144-98, while falling to UNI 136-106. The men beat St. Cloud State 124-116 and fell to USD 145-97.
Women
The Jackrabbits won three events on the women's side, led by junior Pincus who won both the 200 free (1:52.87) and 500 free (5:03.42), recording season-best times in each event.
The team's third victory came in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:35.96 (
Elisabeth Timmer,
Ashley Theobald,
Grace Witherspoon,
Katie Drezen).
Sprint
Theobald tied for second in the 50 free with a team-best time of 24.08. Freshman Timmer placed fourth in the event in 24.10.
Timmer was also a top finisher in the 100 free, leading the Jacks with a third-place finish in 53.06.
Kady Harris finished second in the 100 breast with a time of 1:06.86, just shy of her career-best (1:06.63).
Distance
Daniela Santillan paced the Jacks with a sixth-place finish in the 1,000 free as
Rori Conners also earned points with an eighth-place finish (11:16.26).
Tiffany Nguyen placed third in the 400 IM with a time of 4:42.60. Theobald followed in fourth, posting a time of 4:43.47.
Relays
The women's 'A' team (Nguyen,
Alyssa Eckstein,
Kristen Davis, Pincus) placed third in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:57.50.
Diving
Abbi Rouse finished second in the 1-meter dive with a career-best 237.35, and third in the 3-meter dive (226.35) for the women.
Men
On the men's side, the Jacks won four events and had 10 top-three finishers in day one.
In diving, Mitch Raihle won gold in the 1-meter with a team-best score of 306.10 to qualify for NCAA Zones.
Austin Pham took first in the 400 IM with a time of 4:12.66 while
Cody Watkins won the 100 Fly (51.51) and
Josh Wuflestad won the 100 back (52.93), all good for team-best times in their respective events.
Sprint
Henry Skinner paced the jacks with a third-place finish in the 50 free with a season-best time of 21.29.
In the 100 back, the men claimed both first and second place as
Jared Miller placed second in 53.56.
Distance
Parker R. Brown led the team in the 1,000 free with a fourth-place finish in 10:14.56. Miller finished sixth in a time of 10:17.12.
Relays
The men's 400 medley relay 'A' team (Miller,
Quenton Steffen, Watkins,
Reece Stikeleather) placed fourth in 3:32.71. In the 200 free relay, the men's 'A' squad (Skinner,
Will Bierschbach,
Alex Kraft,
Mac Johnson) placed third with a time of 1:25.95.
Diving
Freshman
Zach Boyd placed second with a season-best dive of 289.50 in the 1-meter. In the 3-meter, Raihle placed second (300.85) and Boyd finished third (272.40).

The Jacks will return to the pool Saturday morning at 10 a.m. to wrap up day two of the event.
