VERMILLION — Cody Vertin won his second individual title of the weekend and added a runner-up finish in another event for a South Dakota State men's swimming and diving team that wrapped up competition at the Coyote Extravaganza with a second-place finish out of four squads.
After winning the 400 individual medley on Friday, Vertin claimed the 200-yard breaststroke in 2 minutes, 5.55 seconds. Teammates Kolden Kringen (2:12.17) and Nik Keuser (2:12.65) finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
A junior from Brookings, Vertin opened the day with a second-place showing in. the 200 individual medley. He clocked a time of 1;54.31, 29-hundredths of a second behind champion Brock Russell of host South Dakota.
Two other Jackrabbits posted runner-up finishes on Saturday. Senior Jack Ellison was second in the 1,000 freestyle, 9:46.86, while David Bosch earned silver in the 100 IM, :52.65 seconds. Luke Watkins placed third in the 1,000 freestyle for SDSU, 9:47.90, with fellow freshman Colt Frein taking fourth in the 100 IM, 53.53 seconds.
In the 200 butterfly, Braxton McGrath placed third with a time of 1:54.91 to lead a group of six Jackrabbits in the top eight. Kringen finished fourth (1:56.33), Owen Byrd placed fifth (1:56.43) and Ellison took sixth (1:56.78). Bryan Wong (seventh in 1:58.27) and Landon Schemel (eighth in 1:59.14) rounded out the SDSU contingent.
Schemel (1:47.07) and Byrd (1:45.27) added respective fourth- and fifth-place efforts in the 200 freestyle.
Another freshman, Colby Williams, had a part in three third-place finishes. Individually, Williams notched a third-place time of 1:54.65 in the 200 backstroke, followed by Evan Schott in fourth place in 1:54.72.
Williams also swam the leadoff leg of both the 400 freestyle and 200 medley relays that came away with third-place showings. He teamed with Frein, Kringen and Zavier Kranz for a time of 3:07.29 in the 400 freestyle relay, while the quartet in the 200 medley relay included Bosch, McGrath and Kranz compiling a time of 1:33.84.
Kranz contributed an individual fourth-place mark of 47.08 seconds as did Deshawn Campbell in 1-meter diving with a score of 250.00 points.
USD won the team title with 2,044.5 points while the Jackrabbits closed the gap Saturday in finishing with a team total of 2,014 points. St. Cloud State (1,910.5) and Augustana (1,326) completed the field.

The Jackrabbits will be in training for nearly three weeks before closing out the fall semester at the St. Thomas Invite Nov. 20-22 in St. Paul, Minnesota.
