The South Dakota State basketball teams will wear "This Game is No Secret" warm-up shirts this week, joining teams across the country in honoring the legacy of Coach John McLendon and celebrating Black History Month.
"This Game is No Secret" references a basketball game from 1944 in which Coach McLendon's North Carolina College for Negroes (now North Carolina Central) defeated Duke University in a game played in secrecy due to Jim Crow Laws. At that time, North Carolina College, like other black colleges, were banned from competing in the NCAA tournament and the NIT.
Coach McLendon was the first African American coach to win an integrated national championship. His team went on to win the NAIA national titles in 1957, 1958 and 1959, making him the first coach in history to win three consecutive national championships.
The SDSU women's team will wear the shirts for Saturday's game against South Dakota and the men will wear the shirts for Wednesday's game against North Dakota State.
