The South Dakota State football team will conclude its first series of practices under new head coach Dan Jackson with the annual Spring Game on Saturday.
Start time is set for 11:30 a.m. at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex. Doors will open at 10:30 a.m. Radio coverage will be available on WNAX 570 AM and at GoJacks.com/watch.
The Spring Game will be an intrasquad scrimmage with the teams divided between offensive and defensive units. The scrimmage will consist of two 15-minute quarters under normal clock rules, with skill-position players conducting seven-on-seven drills and offensive and defensive linemen performing one-on-one drills at the beginning of the event.
The opening drive of the game will consist of the first-team defense versus the second-team offense starting at the offense's 30-yard line. Drives will then alternate between first-team offense and first-team defense starting from a variety of field positions.
Winner of the game will be determined by using the following scoring system:
Offensive touchdown — 6 points
Field goal — 3 points
Extra point (first attempt only) — 1 point
Defensive takeaway/touchdown — 6 points
Defensive stop (three-and-out) — 3 points
Since starting spring practices 40 days ago, Jackson said the team has made steady progress.
"We've accomplished the goals that we wanted this spring, which were to become closer as a brotherhood and master the basics," Jackson said. "I'm really proud of the guys. Every position group has improved."
Not only did Jackson have to rebuild the Jackrabbits' roster, the first-time head coach had to hire a completely new set of coaches.
"The staff has done a great job," Jackson said. "I think the guys feel like they're getting coached at a higher level; they're attacking and learning some new things. I attribute that to the coaches bringing it every day."
South Dakota State is scheduled to open the 2025 season with an Aug. 30 home game against Sacramento State. Season tickets for Jackrabbit football are on sale through GoJacks.evenue.net.
