BROOKINGS, S.D. ? Playing its fourth game in eight days, South Dakota State welcomed NCAA Tournament regular Utah State to Frost Arena on Wednesday night, and despite leading for a good portion of the second half, the Jackrabbits came up just short in a 56-50 game.
After a slow start by both teams, Utah State jumped out to a 17-7 lead mid-way through the first half. The Jacks cut the lead to three with just over five minutes left in the first, but the Aggies bumped it back to 11 at 19-30 by halftime.
The Jacks held the Aggies to a 38.7 percent (12-of-31) shooting percentage in the first half, but could only manage to shoot 25 percent (8-of-32) themselves.
South Dakota State's shooting percentage improved to 44 percent (11-of-25) in the second half, thanks mostly to a 14-0 Jackrabbit run.
The run started with 14:20 left in the game and the Jacks down by nine points at 29-38. By the time it ended with 9:27 left, the Jacks held a 43-38 lead.
Matt Cadwell scored the first five points of the run, Garrett Callahan pitched in five and Thomas Bassett four.
The Jacks largest lead of the game, six points, came with 7:27 left, but Utah State junior Jaycee Carroll erased that deficit with two free-throws and two quick jumpers to tie the game at 47 with 5:42 left.
Utah State outscored the Jacks 9-3 down the stretch in route to its fifth win of the season.
SDSU falls to 1-7 with the loss.
Matt Cadwell led the Jacks in scoring for the fourth straight game with 14 points. He also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out three assists.
Garrett Callahan also broke double digits with 10 points, while Thomas Bassett added 8.
Carroll paced the Aggies with a game high 20 points, 14 in the first half, and tallied the games only double-double by adding 10 rebounds.
Stephen DuCharme finished the game with 11 points and eight rebounds while Chaz Spicer scored 8 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Jackrabbits now head out on a five game road trip starting with Denver on Sunday at 1 p.m. MT (2 p.m. CT) then to Minnesota on Thursday for a 7 p.m. tip off against the Golden Gophers.
