NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - South Dakota State returned to the road one last time before starting a four game home stand on Thursday at Frost Arena. The Jackrabbits took on Cal State Northridge on Sunday with a chance to snap a three game losing streak and come home on a winning note, unfortunately though, the Jacks came up on the short end of a 72-61 game.
Kai Williams scored the first two points of the game from the free throw line, but the Matadors countered with a 12-0 run that Garrett Callahan snapped with the Jacks first field goal of the game with 14:18 remaining in the first half.
The Jacks hung tough though, and whittled away at the lead until Matt Cadwell tied it at 32 with 17 second to go in the first half.
The Matadors hit a pair of free throws with one-second left to take a 34-32 halftime lead.
After a slow start, the Jacks ended up shooting 12-of-23 (52 percent) in the first half compared to the Matadors 12-of-24 (50 percent) effort.
The second half started much like the first, minus the Williams free-throws, with the Matadors on a 12-0 run that stretched their lead to 14 points.
The lead got as high as 19 points for Cal State Northridge before reaching the final 11-point margin of 72-61.
Cadwell led the Jacks with 14 points on 3-of-6 shooting and made all six of his free-throw attempts.
Andy Kleinjan made all three of his free-throws and added a trio of three-pointers on five tries to finish with 12 points.
Kai Williams rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Jacks with 11 points on 3-of-7 shooting (43 percent) and made 5-of-7 shots from the free-throw line. Williams came up one rebound shy of a double-double, but did lead all players with 9 rebounds.
Calvin Chitwood led the Matadors and all scorers with 21 points, while Jonathan Heard pitched in 18.
The Matadors improve to 10-8 with the win while the Jacks fall to 4-14.
South Dakota State returns to action on Thursday, when they host the Utah Valley State Wolverines. Tip-off at Frost Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m.
