BROOKINGS, S.D. - South Dakota State kicked off a season long four game home stand Thursday night at Frost Arena against Utah Valley State trying to snap a four game losing streak. Even though the Jackrabbits kept the game close for the first 30 minutes, they eventually extended the skid to five games with a 66-54 loss to the Wolverines.
The lead only changed hands twice in the first half and Utah Valley State never held a lead larger than six points, but they held it for all but 16 seconds when the Jacks took a short-lived lead on free throws by Matt Cadwell and Blake Yackley with just over three minutes left in the half.
A Josh Olsen three-pointer tied the game for the seventh time in the half and a Peter Brown Dunk helped the Wolverines take a 29-28 halftime lead.
South Dakota State came out fired-up in the second half and after giving up a Wolverine basket to start the half, went on a 10-3 run to take a four-point lead at 38-34 with 14:13 to go in the game.
The Jackrabbit lead did not last though, as Utah Valley State answered with a 16-2 run that ended with a 50-40 Wolverine lead with just over nine minutes left. The Wolverine lead never got higher than 12-points, but the Jacks never really threatened the rest of the way.
The Jacks failed to score a three-point basket in 13 tries compared to the Wolverines who shot 47 percent (8-of-17) from beyond the arc, a difference of 24 points.
SDSU shot 31.5 percent (17-of-54) for the game, UVSC finished the game with a 58.3 shooting percentage (22-of-51).
The Jacks did out-rebound the Wolverines 43-33 and made 76.9 percent (20-of-26) of its free-throws compared to Utah Valley State's 58.3 percent (14-of-24) performance from the line.
Michael Loney scored 11 points in the first half and led the Jackrabbits with 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting and made four of his five free throw attempts. He also added seven rebounds and did not commit any of the Jacks 16 turnovers.
Cadwell finished the night with 11 points and four rebounds, while Kai Williams tallied ten points and a career high 12 rebounds for his second career double double.
Blake Yackley went a Jackrabbit season best 8-for-8 from the free throw line but missed his only shot from the field to finish the night with eight points, he also added five rebounds in 16 minutes on the floor.
Ryan Toolson only played 30 minutes, but he and Jordan Brady led all scorers with 17 points and Brady added a game-high 13 rebounds to complete the double double.
Peter Brown rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Wolverines, who improve to 13-6 on the season, with ten points.
The Jacks, who fall to 4-15 with the loss, return to action on Saturday against Texas Pan-American, a team they beat twice last season.
Tip off against the Broncos on Saturday is slated for 7 p.m. at Frost Arena.
