CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - South Dakota State starting pitcher Kori Seidlitz smacked a three-run double to stake herself to a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the Jackrabbits first game of a scheduled doubleheader at Northern Iowa on Monday, but it came in a losing cause, as the Panthers came back to win 5-4 in nine innings.
The rain that started falling in the bottom of the ninth eventually forced officials to cancel Game 2 of the doubleheader, a game that may be made-up later in the season.
Seiditz's first career-hit marked her only hit on the day in four tries. She also pitched eight and two-thirds innings and took the loss, which drops her to 8-12 on the season, and drops SDSU to 9-22. Seidlitz gave up nine hits, along with five runs, walks and strikeouts.
Northern Iowa started its comeback with one run in the third and tied the game with two more in the fourth inning. The Panthers then took the lead with one run in the fifth to go up 4-3.
Down to their last strike in the seventh, Dani Broshar came though with a singled through the left side to score Andrea New from third base to tie the game a 4-4.
The score stayed the same until bottom of the ninth, when the Panthers pushed a run across with two outs to end the game.
Broshar also finished the game 1-for-4, while Devon Reick, Ashley Durazo and Kelsey Lunn all finished 2-for-5 in the loss.
The Jackrabbits return to action on Wednesday, when they travel to Madison, Wis., for a doubleheader at Wisconsin. The Jacks and Badgers get started from the Goodman Softball Complex at 4 p.m.
