Freshman Jordan Dykstra tallied game highs of 17 points and nine rebounds to lead a balanced South Dakota State University men's basketball team to an 86-62 victory over Centenary (La.) in Summit League action Thursday night at Frost Arena.
The Jackrabbits improved to 11-4 overall and 3-1 in league play. SDSU will host Oral Roberts (Okla.) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the annual Lamb Bonanza game. The women's game tips off the doubleheader at 5 p.m.
Centenary remained winless on the season, falling to 0-16 overall and 0-5 in The Summit League.
SDSU led wire to, racing out to a 13-0 lead in the first five minutes of Thursday's contest. Griffan Callahan and Nate Wolters each connected on three-pointers in the opening run.
The Gents closed to within 13-7 before SDSU out-scored Centenary 29-9 over a nine-minute span to build a 42-16 lead. The Jackrabbits led 44-24 at halftime.
In the second half, the Jackrabbit lead grew to as many as 30 points on two occasions, the last at 81-51 with under seven minutes to play.
Eleven of the 12 Jackrabbit players who suited up scored in the game, including four in double figures. Dykstra was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field and his career-high nine rebounds led a 47-28 SDSU advantage on the glass. Dale Moss and Clint Sargent each scored 12 points, with Callahan adding 10.
SDSU finished the night 31-of-61 from the field, 50.8 percent, including 9-of-20 from three-point range. At the line, the Jackrabbits converted 15-of-23 attempts, 65.2 percent.
Logan Lowery paced Centenary with 12 points. Travis Sims added 10 points off the bench.
Centenary, which opened the game 1-of-13 from the field, ended the game 21-of-54, 38.9 percent. The Gents were 4-of-12 from three-point range and 16-of-23 at the free throw line.
NOTES: SDSU leads the all-time series, 4-3, and has won the last three meetings ... Sargent moved into 17th on the Jackrabbit scoring list with 1,270 points, passing Mark Schultz (1,259 points from 1983-86) ... the Jackrabbits finished above 50 percent shooting for the third consecutive game, a stretch in which SDSU has averaged 94 points per game ... no Jackrabbit starter played more than 22 minutes ... Nate Wolters was the lone SDSU starter not to reach double figures in points, but contributed seven points, six rebounds and six assists in 20 minutes ... freshmen Brayden Carlson and Marcus Heemstra each recorded career highs with seven points ... Carlson also tallied a career-high four steals and matched a career-best with five rebounds ... Dwight Pederson's six rebounds - five of which were on the offensive end - were a career best ... the Jackrabbits were credited with a season-high 23 assists against only 10 turnovers ... attendance was 1,319
