LINCOLN, Neb. - The South Dakota State softball team played its final road games of the season on Wednesday in Lincoln, Neb., at No. 14 Nebraska, and even thought they played the Cornhuskers tough, one bad inning in Game 1 led to a 9-1 Nebraska win and a single run in Game 2 gave the Huskers a 1-0 win and a sweep on the day.
The Jacks fall to 9-37 heading into a weekend series with Western Illinois, while the Huskers improve to 34-9.
Nebraska broke a scoreless tie in the second inning of the opener, when Heidi Foland opened the Husker half of the inning with a single. She quickly stole second, reached third on a Gabby Banda sacrifice and then scored on an illegal pitch.
It stayed 1-0 Nebraska until the bottom of the fourth, when the Huskers utilized four hits, a hit batter and a pair of walks to score six runs and take a commanding 7-0 lead.
SDSU got on the board in the top of the fifth when Greta Stroh eventually turned a walk into a run on an Ashley Durazo sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 7-1, until Taylor Edwards ended the game in the sixth with her 16th homerun of the season, a two-run walk-off shot that gave Nebraska the 9-1 win.
Jackrabbit starter Pam Nicholson and Nebraska starter Tatum Edwards combined to give up one run on four hits in the nightcap, but unfortunately for the Jacks, Nebraska got the one run, while the Jacks got the one hit.
The Huskers scored their run in the fifth, using a hit batter, a pair of singles to plate Morgan McCann for the game's only run.
Edwards did the rest, taking a perfect game into the sixth, before Sammy Bingham hit a one out single through the right side of the infield. Neither team got a hit the rest of the game, leaving the Huskers with the 1-0 win.
The Jacks now return home for the final eight games of the season, starting with a doubleheader against Western Illinois on Friday at 2 p.m.
