Pam Nicholson twirled a two-hit gem of a shutout and got homeruns from Allison Huffman and Marlee Petersen in a 3-0 South Dakota State Game 1 win, but the Jackrabbits came up short in Game 2, despite a three run bomb from Tina Winter in a 4-3 loss to Oakland on Friday in Brookings.
The split gives the Jacks a 12-41 record overall and an 8-15 record in The Summit League heading into tomorrow's season finale. Oakland ends the day with a 16-29 overall record with the same 8-15 mark in conference play.
Nicholson only struck out three batters in the opener, but gave up just the two hits and did not issue any walks to earn the win. All of Nicholson's run support came in the second inning, and all via the long ball.
Huffman opened the frame with her fourth homer of the season, a solo shot over the fence in left center field to put the Jacks up 1-0. After a Winter walk and a Morgan McCabe groundout, Petersen came up and belted her first homerun of the season over the center field fence to put SDSU on top 3-0.
After failing to score in the opener, the Golden Grizzlies scored single runs in the first and second innings of nightcap to take an early 2-0 lead, and then added two more in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead.
The Jacks got on the board in the sixth on Winter's fourth homer of the season, a three run blast the got the Jacks within one at 4-3, but they could not complete the comeback and left the bases loaded in the seventh.
Kori Seidlitz took the loss for SDSU, giving up four runs on six hits with five walks and a pair of strikeouts over three and two-thirds innings. Nicholson, who pitched back-to-back shutouts, came in to pitch the final three and a third innings, but did not surrender any more runs to increase her scoreless innings pitched streak to 17.1.
The Jacks close out the season on Saturday, when they honor seniors Ashley Durazo and Greta Stroh before the 1 p.m. start with Oakland.
