Julia Werkhoven was a two-time winner for South Dakota State in its season-opening equestrian competition Friday at the DeHaan Equestrian Center, but eighth-ranked South Carolina rode an advantage in flat to a 12-8 victory over the Jackrabbits.

The Gamecocks improved to 3-0 in head-to-head competition this season.

Werkhoven, a senior from Tempe, Arizona, picked up half of the Jackrabbits' points in the jumping seat competition with victories in both flat and fences. The team's lone winner in flat, Werkhoven tallied a score of 77 to win her matchup against Natalie Jayne with a 14-point margin.

Cali Karbler also recorded a score of 77 to share team-high honors, but was edged in her matchup with Sophie Mitchell, who scored an 80.

In the second half of the competition, Werkhoven was one of three Jackrabbit riders to win her matchup in fences, posting a score of 75 to edge South Carolina's Alexia Aureliano by one point.

Also victorious in fences for the Jackrabbits were returning all-conference performer Ella Domenicone (84) and Sophia Kregoski (83).

The Western portion of the competition also was closely contested with South Carolina coming away with 3-2 advantages in both horsemanship and reining. Paige Wellendorf (75.5) and Shelby Cochran (71) were victorious for SDSU in horsemanship, with sophomores Adisyn Kuxhaus (70) and Brigthon McBride (68.5) earning points in reining.

The Jackrabbits close out the weekend by hosting Fresno State in head-to-head competition at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
