BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State found a tying goal off a corner kick in the 69th minute, but Denver scored just six minutes later en route to a 2-1 victory over the Jackrabbits on Thursday at Fishback Soccer Park.Â
Â
The Pioneers had four shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes but was thwarted on each as SDSU goalkeeper
Stephanie Leckwold made a pair of saves. SDSU's best opportunity of the opening half came in the 25th minute as forward
Adrianne Agbayani split a pair of Denver defenders. Keeper Molly Wissman was able to get a piece of Agbayani's shot to keep the match scoreless.Â
Â
Leckwold recorded another save as time expired in the first half with the contest tied at 0-0. Denver had a 10-5 shot advantage through 45 minutes of action.Â
Â
The Pioneers broke through in the 65th minute. Liv Moritz registered an unassisted goal to put the visiting side up 1-0 with 25 minutes to play.Â
Â
The Jackrabbits produced an equalizer five minutes later. SDSU got a corner kick opportunity as the clock ticked into the 69th minute.
Kaycee Manding took the kick and sailed in a cross over Denver's Wissman's outstretched arms. The ball found the head of
Ava Grate who put the ball into the net. Grate's first-career goal tied the score at 1-1.Â
Â
That score didn't last long. The ball found its way in the 74th minute to the Jackrabbits' side of the field and SDSU attempted a clearance. Denver's Vanessa Murray intercepted the pass and dribbled her way to the box. She found Payten Ivins whose ensuing shot went in for a goal, giving the Pioneers the 2-1 edge.Â
Â
The Jacks were able to get just one more shot on goal for the remaining 21 minutes and that attempt by
Mia Bosch was saved by Wissman. Â
Â
Denver finished off the 2-1 tally to improve to 10-5-2 overall as well as 4-1-2 in Summit League action. South Dakota State fell to 11-4-2 (4-2-1).Â
