South Dakota State plays the second of two straight games in First Bank & Trust Arena at 7 p.m. on Wednesday when the Jackrabbits host Southern Miss.Â
The Jackrabbits and Golden Eagles match up in the second part of a home-and-home series. SDSU and Southern Miss met almost a year to the date in Hattiesburg as the two squared off on Nov. 22. For the Jacks, it was the finale as part of a three-game road trip which included two games in Florida at the Jacksonville Classic.
The contest in Reed Green Coliseum last season saw SDSU come away with a 65-54 victory.
Kalen Garry hit a 3-pointer less than 30 seconds into the game and the Jackrabbits never trailed from there. SDSU had a 17-point lead at one point, but it got cut to six midway through the second half. Southern Miss never cut it closer as the Jacks held the Golden Eagles to 29.1% shooting while SDSU was 47.8% from deep.
The Jacks are 3-1 this season after an 89-41 victory over Mount Marty in First Bank & Trust Arena on Monday. The scoring margin was the program's largest against an opponent since defeating Minnesota-Morris by a 112-47 score in December of 2021. The 41 points scored by Mount Marty was the lowest SDSU has held a foe to since January of 2015 when the Jackrabbits earned a 69-39 win over Denver.Â
SDSU saw several firsts in Monday's game. Freshman
Stoney Hadnot made his first-career start. He played 21 minutes and scored 11 points. Senior
Isaac Lindsey appeared his first time as a Jackrabbit on the floor. Lindsey matched his career high of eight points while he played a career-best 28 minutes. Redshirt freshman
Damon Wilkinson made his collegiate debut and scored eight points in 11 minutes of action.
Southern Miss enters Wednesday's contest at 2-1 overall which includes victories over Bowling Green and Loyola New Orleans. Andre Curbelo leads the Golden Eagles scoring 15.5 points per game and dishing out seven assists. The Golden Eagles rosters features four new Division I transfers which include current leading rebounder and shot blocker Denijay Harris, as well as tied as the second leading scorer with DeAntoni Gordon.
