BROOKINGS, S.D. - South Dakota State volleyball dropped a five-set match to St. Thomas Thursday night at First Bank & Trust Arena. Set scores against the Tommies went 25-22, 22-25, 16-25, 25-15, 14-16.
The loss ends SDSU's 22-match unbeaten streak and moves them to 22-1 on the season and 11-1 in Summit League action. St. Thomas is 15-10 overall and 7-6 in the conference.
Trailing 2-1 in the match after hitting .00 in set three, SDSU bounced back with a dominant 25-15 victory in the fourth.
In the fifth, St. Thomas opened up an 11-5 lead and went on to lead 14-8, setting up six match point opportunities for the Tommies. With
Madison Burr on the service line, SDSU put together a 6-0 run capped by a Burr ace to tie the final set at 14-all. St. Thomas won the final two points.
Sylvie Zgonc tallied 21 kills to lead the Jackrabbits, her fifth match with at least 20 kills this season. She also had 14 digs in the match for her 14th double-double of the season. Zgonc rounded out her stat line with four assists and two blocks.
Madison Burr and
Katie Van Egdom added nine kills each. Burr also contributed four blocks, four digs and two ace serves. Van Egdom tallied four digs.
Sydni Schetnan had eight kills and four blocks, including two solo blocks.
Alyssa Groves had six kills and four block assists.
Rylee Martin and
Camryn Honn dished 23 and 22 assists, respectively. Martin tallied nine digs and three aces. Honn had 10 digs.
SDSU his .197 for the match, compared to .209 hitting by St. Thomas. The Jacks had a 62-60 edge in kills and 72-70 advantage in digs. St. Thomas out-blocked the Jackrabbits 11-10. Both teams had seven ace serves.
Lauren Galvin paced St. Thomas with 16 kills. Libero Ella Voegele had 24 digs.
NOTES
- Rylee Martin's three ace serves bring her season total to 32, good for sole possession of fifth place on SDSU's single-season aces chart for the current scoring era.
- This is St. Thomas' first win over SDSU. The Jackrabbits are 7-1 all-time against the Tommies.
