South Dakota State continues non-conference play this week with three games over the course of a six-day span. The Jackrabbits host Dakota Wesleyan first at 7 p.m. on Monday.
The Jacks then play a pair of games as a part of the Big Sky-Summit Challenge. SDSU travels to Missoula, Mont., to face the Grizzlies in Dahlberg Arena at 8 p.m. CT on Wednesday. The Jackrabbits take on Eastern Washington at 6 p.m. on Saturday in Brookings.
SDSU is coming off a 2-1 stay at the Cayman Islands Classic.
Oscar Cluff was named to the All-Tournament Team for three consecutive double-double performances. The Jackrabbits beat Duquesne, an NCAA Tournament squad a season ago. SDSU fell 83-82 to Boise State in the semifinals just narrowly missing out extending the matchup to overtime. The Jacks closed out the trip by beating Missouri State, 75-55, leading for more than 38 minutes in the contest.
SDSU stands at 6-2 overall with the Jackrabbits' only other loss a 78-69 defeat to Northern Colorado on a neutral-site floor. The Jack look to improve on one of their stronger starts in recent memory. Since SDSU made the transition to the Division I level in 2004, the Jacks have had similar opening eight-game starts in two other seasons. SDSU's 2015-16 team eventually opened the first 10 games of its season with a 9-1 record, while the 2021-22 squad got its schedule started with an 8-2 record.
Dakota Wesleyan travels to Brookings with a 6-2 record to begin its 2023-24 season. The Tigers' only losses include a two-point defeat to Valley City State and a loss to NAIA nationally-ranked Northwestern. DWU fell in an exhibition to South Dakota on Nov. 14, 92-69, in Vermillion.
The Jacks face a set of familiar foes in the Big Sky-Summit Challenge this week. Two years ago, SDSU traveled to Missoula and hosted EWU in Brookings as part of the series. The Jackrabbits dropped an 81-56 contest to the Griz that season and fell to 1-6 all-time against Montana. SDSU trailed by 23 late in the second half versus the Eagles, but mounted a furious comeback that was capped by a
Zeke Mayo game-winner for a 77-76 win. SDSU is 2-0 all-time over EWU.
