BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State makes its seventh appearance in the NCAA Division I men's basketball on Thursday when the Jackrabbits, the No. 15 seed in the East Region, take on No. 2 seed Iowa State. The Jacks and Cyclones are slated to tip-off at 6:35 p.m. CT in Omaha, Neb., at the CHI Health Center.Â
Â
SDSU is making its second showing in the NCAA tournament under the guidance of fifth-year head coach
Eric Henderson, each of which has come in the previous three seasons. Two years ago, SDSU was a 13-seed when it faced 4-seed Providence in the opening round. The Jackrabbits fell to the Friars, 66-57.
Â
SDSU went into that March Madness appearance with a 30-4 record and 21-game win streak. The Jacks are currently on an eight-game winning streak, the program's longest since the 2022 NCAA showing. SDSU is 22-12 overall this season.
Â
The Jacks are 0-6 all-time in NCAA Division I tournament appearances. SDSU lost opening-round matchups to 3-seed Baylor in 2012 (68-60), 4-seed Michigan in 2013 (71-56), 5-seed Maryland in 2016 (79-74), 1-seed Gonzaga in 2017 (66-46) and 5-seed Ohio State in 2018 (81-73). Two of those opponents, Michigan in 2013 and Gonzaga in 2017, advanced to the national championship where they fell short. Baylor in 2012 advanced to the Elite Eight.
Â
The Jackrabbits enter March Madness after claiming The Summit League's regular season and tournament titles. SDSU went 12-4 in conference play, sealing the regular season crown in the second-to-last game of the slate. It was the ninth regular season title for the program in the past 12 seasons, tying The Summit League record among men's team's all-time with Valparaiso.
Â
The Jacks earned wins over Oral Roberts (79-63), St. Thomas (59-49) and Denver (76-68) to earn the conference's tournament title. SDSU now owns seven Summit League tournament championships, the most among the conference's active members and second to Valpo's record of eight.
Â
Iowa State is 27-7 overall this season and enters the NCAA tournament after winning the Big 12 tournament title. The Cyclones are led by former South Dakota State head coach, T.J. Otzelberger.
