BROOKINGS, S.D. - The South Dakota State women's basketball team opened its home slate with a 79-65 win over Rice Friday night at First Bank & Trust Arena.
The Jackrabbits led for more than 32 minutes of the contest but the Owls were always within striking distances and did not trail by double digits until the fourth quarter.
Brooklyn Meyer had another standout night for the Jackrabbits, tallying 22 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks in the win. The senior had just five points at halftime, then went 7-for-12 for 17 points after the break. She has 14 career double-doubles.

Emilee Fox (13) and
Mahli Abdouch (12). That trio of guards, all underclassmen, had zero turnovers on the night. Fox and Abdouch recorded two assists apiece.
Senior
Madison Mathiowetz scored all nine of her points in the fourth quarter with one 3-point field goal and a 6-of-6 effort from the free two line as the Jackrabbits outscored the Owls 22-15 in the final period. Mathiowetz chipped in three rebounds and a pair of assists.
Maggie Hartwig grabbed 14 rebounds and added four points, two blocked shots and a steal. Hartwig averages 13.0 rebounds per contest through two games played.
Tied at 16 after the opening 10 minutes, SDSU then put together a 13-4 stretch to go up nine, 29-20, with 3:36 to go in the first half. Rice came back to within two late in the period and the Jackrabbits ended the first half with a 38-34 lead.
Rice briefly took the lead at 43-42 by scoring nine of the first 13 points of the second half. Meyer answered with a layup on the Jackrabbits' next possession and the home team did not trail again. Led by Mathiowetz, SDSU went 13-for-15 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.Â
SDSU shot 42 percent for the game but was just 25 percent from the 3-point line. Rice was 32 percent overall and 26 percent from deep. The Jackrabbits out-rebounded the Owls, 45-42. Rice had a 13-8 edge in assists.
South Dakota State improves to 2-0 on the season while Rice opens the year 0-1.
