IOWA CITY, Iowa — South Dakota State's men's squad closed the opening night of the 2025 Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships on a high note with a double-record performance Wednesday.
The Jackrabbits' 800 freestyle relay team of Sam Johnson, Zavier Kranz, Denilson Cyprianos and Austin Smith posted a school-record time of 6 minutes, 33.38 seconds en route to a runner-up finish in the event. Denver won the event in 6:29.62.
Johnson, Cyprianos and Smith were all part of the previous record of 6:36.25 set at last year's league meet, when they teamed with Eric Anderson..
In addition, Johnson set a new SDSU standard individually in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:37.46 on the leadoff leg. That eclipsed the previous school record of 1:37.50 established by Trever Brenner in 2019.
SDSU's record-setting performance in the 800 freestyle relay came after the Jackrabbits began the night by being disqualified in the 200 medley relay.
The Jackrabbit men stand in sixth place out of seven teams at the end of Day 1 after also earning 26 points with a sixth-place finish in the team diving event with a combined score of 249.25 . A new event this season, three divers from each squad perform one dive from each of the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Freshman Seth Berens tallied the highest single-dive score at 46.2 points on a forward 3 ½ sommersault tuck on the 3-meter board.
On the women's side, SDSU claimed fourth-place in each of the two relays contested Wednesday night.
The foursome of Jenna Currier, Emma Schultz, Emma Ingalls and Gigi Hioki combined for a time of 1:43.16 in the 200 medley relay. Schultz and Hioki later combined with Aubrey Douds and Sara Juez for a fourth-place time of 7:30.68 in the 800 freestyle relay.
Sophomore Annabelle Gifford placed 15th in 1-meter diving with a score of 194.35 points to round out the scoring for the Jackrabbit women on Wednesday.
SDSU also is in sixth place in the women's team standings with 62 points, but only seven points away from fourth place.
Competition resumes Thursday with preliminary and qualifying rounds at 10 a.m., followed by event finals at 6 p.m. at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center on the University of Iowa campus.
