PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Cade DeVos scored two wins on Thursday to make his way to the quarterfinals as eight Jacks remain alive at the NCAA Tournament after day one.
DeVos was the only Jackrabbit to make the quarterfinals of the tournament after he upset No. 4 Garrett Thompson of Ohio with a 9-3 decision. DeVos scored two takedowns early and never looked back, piling on the points and booking a trip to the quarterfinals against No. 5 Simon Ruiz (Cornell).
In other round of 16 action, Julian Tagg faced a tough task against No. 2 Beau Bartlett of Penn State. Tagg was the aggressor, but Bartlett scrambled on a Tagg shot, turning it into a takedown and the crucial points in a 4-1 decision loss for Tagg.
No. 5 Bennett Berge faced off with No. 12 Silas Allred of Nebraska. Berge pushed the pace for the match, scoring a takedown and holding a 4-1 lead going into the third. But Allred caught Berge's leg wrestling on the edge and was able to score a pin and send Berge to the wrestlebacks.
In the consolation bracket, No. 30 Derrick Cardinal went 2-0 during session two, putting together two decision wins over Nolan Wertanen and TK Davis to keep him alive heading to session three.
Tanner Jordan made short work of No. 26 Keyveon Roller of Virginia, scoring multiple takedowns and only allowing one reversal on his way to an 11-2 major decision.
With his collegiate career on the line, Cobe Siebrecht went up against No. 30 James Conway and found himself down 5-1, heading to the third. Siebrecht pushed the pace and went on the offensive, scoring two takedowns in the last minute, picking up the 7-5 decision and moving on to the next round.
No. 14 Zach Glazier faced off against No. 30 Ian Bush for the third time since the Big 12 Championships. Glazier was cool as ice as he scored a takedown that was all he needed to take out Bush, 4-3.
Luke Rasmussen closed the show for the Jacks as he took on No. 24 Nolan Neves (UNC) in the consolation bracket. After a scoreless first, Rasmussen scored a takedown in the second, followed by a reversal in the third. Neves mounted a comeback, reversing Rasmussen and putting him on his back to take a 6-5 lead before Rasmussen turned the tide again, reversing Neves and scoring near-fall points to claim a 10-6 decision.
The only Jackrabbit to bow out of the tournament was Drake Rhodes, who dropped a 9-3 decision to No. 30 Aiden Riggins of Iowa St.
