BOULDER CITY, Nev. - The South Dakota State men's golf team won its home event - the Jackrabbit Invitational - for the second time in as many years Saturday at Boulder Creek Golf Club. SDSU junior
Bryson Mercier also repeated as the tournament's individual medalist.
The Jackrabbits were in first place following the first two rounds, which were played Friday, and the team maintained its lead through Saturday's 18 holes. SDSU bested North Dakota by seven shots.
"I am so proud of this group," said head coach
Parker Edens. "They battled some adversity yesterday and today. They got off to a poor start each day but stayed the course and knew their opportunities were coming. We've done some different things at home in practice and workouts to make things really difficult so they can start feeling comfortable in uncomfortable situations. They are starting to see the benefits of their labor."
Mercier finished 6-under par for his 54 holes. His best round came on Friday's second lap, during which he carded a program-record-matching 65 (-7). Mercier ended up three shots ahead of teammate
Ty Kretz, who finished runner-up. Kretz's best round also came Friday as he fired a 67 (-5) on the second 18 holes.
"Bryson and Ty have been incredible anchors for our team," Edens continued. "We can lean on them when needed. It's very difficult to win in college golf and our guys know that. I hope they're as proud of themselves as I am. It's a great day to be a Jackrabbit!"
Tyler Seeling went even-par on his final round and finished in a three-way tie for 12th place (+9).
Drew Teeter placed 25th (+15) and
Blake Schaper was 39th (+19).
Jake Olson and
Marco Lin competed individually for the Jackrabbits. Olson ended the weekend 8-over to place 11th overall. Lin was +16 and finished 29th.
