TULSA, Okla. - On day one of the Big 12 Tournament, the Jacks had five wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Tournament. Cobe Siebrecht will be the lone Jackrabbit competing in the finals of the Big 12 Tournament after his upset of No.1 seed Cody Chittum.
Siebrecht was the first to gain qualification, scoring a 4-2 decision win over Ryker Fullmer in the first round and after outlasting No. 5 Jared Hill in the quarterfinals to secure a top-six finish. But Siebrecht wasn't done there, as he took on No. 1 Cody Chittum in the semis. Siebrecht successfully defended a cement mixer and scored at takedown early in the first. He would add on with consecutive takedowns in periods two and three, scoring a major decision and a trip to the 157-pound finals. He will compete tomorrow night in Session Four.
Cade DeVos followed up Siebrecht's qualification with one of his own. After having a bye in the first round, DeVos took care of business against No. 4 Jared Simma, evening the season series between the two, 2-2. This win against Simma secured NCAA Qualification for DeVos, the fifth of his career. In the semi-finals, DeVos ran into No. 1 Dean Hamiti. Hamiti scored early and often, putting up a 10-2 lead in the second before DeVos battled bac,k scoring a takedown to make it 10-7. Hamiti was ultimately too much and scored a major decision over DeVos, 17-8.
No. 3 Bennet Berge majored his way into the NCAA Tournament, scoring consecutive major decision wins over Shay Addison (ASU) and No. 6 Eddie Neitenbach, his third win over Neitenbach this year. In the semi-finals, Berge went up against No. 2 Dustin Plott and went on the aggressive early in the match, scoring the first takedown. But Plott's riding ability proved to be too much as he scored a takedown and racked up riding time, securing a 7-3 decision.
After a first-round bye, Derrick Cardinal found himself up against a familiar foe in No. 2 Dominick Serrano. Cardinal dropped a close contest between the pair, 8-5 and would have to win two matches to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. Cardinal put together a 7-0 decision win over Gavin Caprella and then took on No. 6 Cleveland Belton. After a scoreless first, Cardinal scored two near-fall points and followed it up with a takedown in the third to secure a 7-0 decision and his second NCAA qualification.
Julian Tagg also had a bye in his first round and had a tough task waiting for him in the quarters, former National Champ, Andrew Alirez. Tagg made a valiant effort but could not tie Alirez back up after an early takedown, dropping the close contest 4-3. Tagg went up first against Eli Griffin of Cal Baptist in his consolation matches. Tagg landed a takedown in the second and defended himself after giving up a takedown to Griffin, ultimately securing a 5-4 decision. With NCAA qualification on the line, he took on No. 5 Mosha Schwartz of Oklahoma. After a scoreless first, Tagg scored a takedown before giving up a reversal. All square at three in the third, Schwartz chose top position, where Tagg was able to reverse it and put Schwartz on his back for the pin and his first NCAA qualification.
Avery Allen went up against a tough opponent to start his day, facing off against No. 2 Paniro Johnson. A close contest, Johnson's escape was the difference as he scored a 2-0 win. Allen then went up against No. 8 Benji Alanis in the consolation bracket. He scored a takedown in the second and didn't look back on his way to a major decision win. He then ran into No. 4 Gabe Willochell of Wyoming. After a scoreless first, Allen gave up an escape in the second. Allen then scored a reversal late in the third period, putting Willochell on his back in the process on his way to a 6-1 decision. He'll wrestle for NCAA qualification tomorrow.
In the quarterfinals, Zach Glazier went up against No. 5 Ian Bush of West Virginia. A takedown was all that separated the two as Glazier scored a 4-2 decision win. Glazier's offense was stifled in his semi-final match with No. 1 Luke Surber, resulting in a 1-0 loss after choosing neutral in the third period.
Luke Rasmussen got back in the win column, scoring a win by fall in his first match over Tristan Kemp of Cal Baptist. He wouldn't get so lucky in his second match as Cohlton Schultz scored a tech fall win to send Rasmussen to the consolation bracket. In the consolation bracket, Rasmussen came out on fire, scoring a tech fall win over Antonio Ramos of Air Force and followed it up by scoring a major decision over No. 3 Lance Runyon of UNI, avenging an early season loss during the UNI/SDSU dual. Rasmussen will wrestle for NCAA Qualification tomorrow.
In other action, Tanner Jordan scored two pins but dropped two matches to No. 4 Troy Spratley and No. 1 Richard Figueroa. He will wrestle for seventh place tomorrow with a spot at the NCAA Tournament on the line.
No. 4 Drake Rhodes was the only Jackrabbit wrestler eliminated on Saturday. Rhodes went down with an injury in his first match against Clayton Ulrey and defaulted out of the tournament.

The Jacks are back in action at the Big 12 Tournament tomorrow. Session Three begins at Noon CT. Session Three will finish the consolation bracket out and end with placing matches. Session Four begins at 8 p.m CT and will feature all 10 Championships bouts, including Cobe Siebrecht at 157 pounds.
