MINNEAPOLIS - The South Dakota State volleyball team won by sweep for the second time in as many days Saturday with a 25-22, 25-22, 25-23 win over RV South Florida at Maturi Pavilion. The Jackrabbits improve to 5-1 overall while the Bulls drop to 2-5.
Sylvie Zgonc, the only Jackrabbit to reach double-digit kills, finished the day with a match-high 14 to go with 10 digs.
Madison Burr was next for SDSU with seven kills while hitting .500 and posting six blocks (five assists, one solo).
Annalee Ventling-Brown added six kills, five blocks and four digs.
Sydni Schetnan also notched five blocks.
Setter
Rylee Martin orchestrated the offense with 23 assists and contributed defensively with 11 digs.
The Jackrabbits tallied six aces as a team, paced by a pair from
Alia Schlimgen. SDSU also had the edge in blocks, 11-6, and hitting percentage (.209-.154). The Bulls tallied more kills (41-37) and aces (7-6) than the Jacks.
South Florida's Arianna Beckham led her team with 11 kills, followed by Maria Clara Andrade with nine. Imani Hartfield posted eight block assists.
Set one: The opening set featured seven ties and one lead change. After trading points early, SDSU pulled ahead with a 6-0 run to lead 11-5 behind kills from
Sydni Schetnan,
Sylvie Zgonc,
Annalee Ventling-Brown and
Hannah Klein. USF responded to tie the set again at 16, but the Jacks pulled ahead again and led 19-16 on an ace by
Alia Schlimgen.
Rachel Wieber notched an ace to win the set, 25-22.
Set two: The second set saw 10 ties and four lead changes. A pair of aces from USF's Raegen Richardson during a 6-0 run had the Bulls up 8-4.
Madison Burr tallied a kill an then an ace to pull the Jacks back within one at 10-9. The Bulls went up five again, then a 6-1 stretch for SDSU had the game tied at 16. The game was tied six more times before the Jackrabbits finally won with a 3-0 run. Burr teamed up with
Sylvie Zgonc and then
Annalee Ventling-Brown for blocks on the final two points.
Set three: SDSU jumped all over USF to start the final game but the Bulls did not go away without a fight. The Jacks rattled off five straight points on the serve of
Joslyn Richardson, then put together another 6-2 run to lead 12-4. The Bulls clawed all the way back to trail by only one at 24-23 before Zgonc delivered the match-winning kill.
