ST. PAUL, Minn. - The South Dakota State volleyball team beat St. Thomas 3-1 (21-25, 27-25, 26-16, 25-18) Saturday afternoon at Schoenecker Arena. The win clinches the outright Summit League regular season title for South Dakota State for the second straight year.
South Dakota State notched 19 blocks as a team, a new program record for blocks in a four-set match in the rally scoring era (since 2001).
Sydni Schetnan tallied 11 block assists, which is also a program record for a four-set match, and had two solo rejections.
Annalee Ventling-Brown added five blocks for SDSU, three assisted and two solo. Outside hitters
Hannah Klein and
Sylvie Zgonc took part in four blocks apiece while
Rylee Martin and
Madison Burr added three each.
Sylvie Zgonc led all players with 19 kills on the match, which moved her into the top 10 in program history for career kills (1,239). As just a junior, Zgonc is in 10th place all time and 289 kills from the top five. Zgonc contributed 16 digs for her 13th double-double of the year.
Burr hit .462 for the match with eight kills and two errors on 13 swings. She was 5-for-6 with no errors over the last two sets. Burr also notched a career high with 10 digs in the match. Klein added seven kills and Schetnan had five.
Joslyn Richardson matched her career best with 20 digs and had one of SDSU's three ace serves. Setter
Rylee Martin notched 15 digs and dished 35 assists.
The Jackrabbits held the Tommies to a .091 hitting percentage, but St. Thomas did have a 55-41 advantage in kills. SDSU had 19 blocks and UST had six.
South Dakota State improves to 20-3 overall and 14-0 in the Summit League. This is the second time the Jackrabbits have won 20 games in a season in six seasons under Georgalas. St. Thomas is 16-8 overall and 9-4 in conference matches.
NOTES
SDSU is now 9-1 all-time against St. Thomas.
