FALCON HEIGHTS, MINN. —Cody Larson finished runner-up to lead South Dakota State to a fourth-place team finish with 71 points, while Ashlyn Hillyard led the women to a sixth-place team finish with 144 points at the Roy Griak meet Friday morning.
HEAD COACH ROD DEHAVEN
"I thought it was a good day overall for the men. We were more aggressive than I would have anticipated, but hats off to them. This group has big goals, and certainly Cody [Larson] has big goals and gives a catalyst for that aggression early on. I would have anticipated that we would have struggled more in the second half of the race, but I think the guys held together pretty well. We look forward to the next competition to see if we can tighten up our group a little bit and get our fourth, fifth, and sixth runners a little closer to our top three."
Larson posted a strong performance at the Griak, battling Jacob White of Wyoming for the top spot. Larson finished the Merrill Fischbein Men's 8K at 24:56.4 to take silver. Jackson Dutcher crossed the line at 25:29.4 to land just outside of the top-10 at 11th place. Cashton Johnson posted a personal record as he crossed the line at 25:33.9, besting his PR by 11 seconds to take 14th. Eli Hall and Brandon Kampsen rounded out the scoring five in 24th and 26th, respectively. Hall clocked a time of 26:01.0, while Kampsen crossed the line at 26:05.9.
Will Lohr claimed 31st in the race with a time of 26:08.9. Dale Johnson finished not long after at 26:24.0 to take 37th. Cade Sanvik posted a time of 26:35.8 to finish 44th. Luke Johnson and Jared Lutmer finished a few runners away from each other in 55th and 58th, respectively. Luke Johnson crossed the line at 26:56.5, while Lutmer finished at 27:02.5.
Also racing for the Jackrabbits was Tyler O'Neil (82nd, 27:46.8), Keaton Olson (93rd, 28:15.6) and Will Harder (98th, 28:26.8).
ASSISTANT COACH ALEX MUNTEFERING
"There were certainly some positives today, but we had some challenges as well that we had to overcome within the race. We didn't necessarily get the team result we were looking for, but it's a very similar post-race feeling this year as we had last year after the Griak, and I trust that we'll be able to right the ship as we head into the second half of the season."
Hillyard led the team during the Jack Johnson Women's 6K race, taking 13th overall with a time of 22:13.4. Transfer Eleni Lovgren cruised across the line second for the Jackrabbits, posting a time of 22:55.9 to take 34th in the race. Standout sophomore Courtney Stadter crossed the line four seconds later at 22:59.7 to take 35th. Freshman Nora Peterson scored some points for the Jacks with a 40th-place finish at 23:07.8, while Nina Dawson rounded out the scoring five in 46th with a time of 23:20.4.
