BROOKINGS, S.D. - The South Dakota State volleyball team wrapped up its non-conference season with a 3-2 loss to Boise State Saturday afternoon at First Bank & Trust Arena.
The Jackrabbits won the opening set 25-21 and set three 25-15. The Broncos took sets two, four and five - 25-21, 25-19, 15-13. SDSU heads into Summit League action with a 6-3 record while Boise State improves to 8-3 on the year.
Sylvie Zgonc posted her sixth double-double of the season with 17 kills and 18 digs for the Jacks. The junior surpassed 1,000 kills for her SDSU career and is the seventh active junior in Division I to reach the 1,000 mark.
Hannah Klein and
Sydni Schetnan added 10 kills apiece. Schetnan hit .429 for the match and nearly had a double-double, finishing with nine blocks.
Madison Burr also had a strong defensive showing with seven blocks to go with six kills and four digs.
Annalee Ventling-Brown had seven kills, four blocks and three digs.
Rylee Martin dished 45 assists and had eight digs and three kills.
Joslyn Richardson matched Zgonc's 18 digs and
Rachel Wieber had 11.
Boise State had three players with at least 10 kills, paced by Bridey O'Connor with 16 kills. Layla Smith notched 12 kills and 11 blocks. The Broncos had five players with at least 10 digs.
Set one: South Dakota State jumped out to a 4-0 lead behind a kill and a block from
Sydni Schetnan and a pair of Bronco errors. Boise State worked back to tie the set, then a 5-0 SDSU run that included a
Joslyn Richardson ace pushed the Jacks up 15-10.
Hannah Klein put down consecutive kills during a four-point stretch to lead 22-16. Boise State managed a couple aces to keep them within striking distance, but a
Madison Burr kill ended it 25-21.
Sylvie Zgonc had five kills in the set.
Set two: Boise State rebounded in the second set, holding the Jacks to just .061 hitting. SDSU led the majority of the set and was up 21-17 late, but Boise State put together an 8-0 run to even the match at 1-1. SDSU was blocked four times in that final run.
Set three: SDSU was dominant in set three, tallying six blocks and holding the Broncos to a negative hit percentage. The Jackrabbit offense hit .200 with 10 kills. Boise State has four straight unforced attack errors that helped the Jackrabbits stretch their lead to 21-12.
Sydni Schetnan recorded a solo block and
Sylvie Zgonc capped a long rally with a kill for the final two points of the set.
Set four: The Broncos quickly built a 7-3 lead, which had the Jacks playing from behind for the rest of the set. SDSU was able to tie the game at 15 on a kill from
Annalee Ventling-Brown but Boise State rattled off the next four points. Boise State's Arianna Bilby had consecutive kills to finish the set and force a fifth set.
Set five: The teams traded points early until a three-point run by the Broncos had the visitors up 9-5. A pair of Boise State kills made it 11-6.
Sydni Schetnan had three kills during a 3-1 SDSU run that had the Jacks within three at 12-9.
Sylvie Zgonc and
Madison Burr each had a kill, then the duo teamed up on a block to make it a one-point game at 14-13. Boise State won the match on a kill from Layla Smith.

Sydni Schetnan moved into ninth place on SDSU's career blocks chart. With 275 blocks as a Jackrabbit, Schetnan passes Sydney Andrews (273).Â
