South Dakota State makes its home debut on Friday at 8:30 p.m. when the Jackrabbits take on Briar Cliff inside First Bank & Trust Arena. The SDSU men play the second game of a doubleheader that begins with a Jackrabbits women's hoops matchup versus Northern Iowa at 6 p.m.
The Jackrabbits return to action following a road victory at Kansas State on Tuesday. SDSU led for over 24 minutes against the Wildcats, and withstood a last-second jumper that would have sent the game to overtime, as the Jacks closed out a 68-66 win. The victory for the program was its first ever against K-State.
SDSU earned its sixth win in 39 tries against the current make-up of members in the Big 12 Conference. The Jackrabbits' last win against a Big 12 foe came in Ames against Iowa State when SDSU beat the Cyclones on Dec. 2, 2020, by a 71-68 score. It was also the Jackrabbits' first road triumph to begin a season since 2010-11, a 67-55 win at Eastern Illinois.
SDSU received contributions from a mix of new and veteran players. Returning guards in
Kalen Garry and
Joe Sayler played over 36 minutes apiece in the contest. Garry scored 14 points on 6-for-11 shooting and tied for a game-high eight rebounds. Sayler recorded 10 points and tied for a game-high four assists.
Redshirt freshman
Davis Kern, while not a new face in the program, made a splash in his first game. The Marion, Iowa, native scored 24 points, matching the most in an SDSU debut since Douglas Wilson in 2019. His point output is the most by a Jackrabbit freshman in their college opener during SDSU's DI era.
A pair of newcomers in
Jon Mekonnen and
EJ Ryans each played over 30 minutes at K-State. Mekonnen recorded 14 points and had three steals, while Ryans dished out four assists and didn't turn the ball over.
SDSU plays four home games in November. The Jackrabbits are 15-6 during their Division I era in home openers.
The Jacks are 4-2 all-time against Briar Cliff. SDSU last hosted the Chargers in the 1988-89 season. The Chargers enter Friday's game at 1-3 overall.
