STEPHENVILLE, Texas – South Dakota State benefited from another stellar effort in the circle en route to an 11-1 run-rule victory over Colgate on Sunday at the Tarleton Softball Complex. The Jackrabbits defeated the Raiders in six innings to close out play at the Whataburger Invitational.
Â
Colgate took the opening lead of the game in the top of the first inning. A walk and hit by pitch put two Raiders on base before a fielder's choice plated Colgate's lone run of the meeting.Â
Â
South Dakota State followed by scoring three runs in both the first and second frames.Â
Â
Sacrifice flies by
Abby Gentry and
Alivya Bollen, along with an RBI double off the bat of
Ella Berlage, put the Jackrabbits ahead 3-1. The bottom of the second saw
Bria Riebel lead the inning off with a single. She'd be plated on a two-run home run by
Akayla Barnard to extend the score to 5-1. A bases-loaded walk drawn by
Alli Boyle made it a 6-1 margin.
Â
The Jackrabbits threatened to break the game open. SDSU was unable to close things out earlier as the Jacks left 10 runners on base.Â
Â
SDSU starting pitcher
Madi Mangulis was solid throughout her appearance. The Jackrabbit senior completed 1-2-3 innings from the second through the fourth frames.Â
Â
The Jacks narrowly finished the proceedings out in the bottom of the fifth. A Berlage two-run single pushed SDSU advantage up to 8-1. However, a double play ended SDSU's threat with the bases loaded as the game went to a sixth inning.
Â
Magnulis pitched 5 2/3 innings before giving up her first hit of the day. The Raiders had two batters produce singles in the frame before Mangulis closed it out with a strikeout.Â
Â
South Dakota State drew two walks to begin the bottom of the sixth. After a fielder's choice for the first out of the inning,
Emma Vike crushed a three-run home run to end the game behind an 11-1 score.
