After playing its first 21 games of the season on the road, the South Dakota State baseball team is scheduled to open the home portion of its 2026 schedule with a three-game weekend series against Summit League rival North Dakota State.

SHORT HOPS: Following are some more quick notes regarding the South Dakota State baseball team heading into this weekend's series against North Dakota State:
Seven of the Jackrabbits' last 10Â games have been decided by one run, including both games of their mid-week series March 17-18 at Oklahoma State. Overall, SDSU is 1-7 in one-run games this season.
The Jackrabbits were outscored by a combined 8-0 in the eighth inning of the three games this past weekend at Oral Roberts. ORU scored twice in the eighth inning of each of the first two games to break ties.
SDSU set a program single-game record by scoring 17 runs in the fourth inning of its 19-11, series-opening win at Incarnate Word. Each of the first 12 batters of the inning reached base safely and a total of 21 men went to the plate in the frame.
After allowing double figures in runs in each of their first five games, the Jacks have given up a total of 94 runs over the last 16 games (5.9 rpg). Starters Sam Schlecht and Sam Novotny have led the way; Schlecht is 2-0 with a 1.54 ERA (4 ER in 23.1 IP) with 22 strikeouts and eight walks over his last four starts, while Novotny has compiled a 3.38 ERA (9 ER in 24 IP) with 13 strikeouts and only four walks in that same span.
Left-handed reliever Tristan Augedahl has registered 19 strikeouts in only 13 1/3 innings of work so far this season. Augedahl factored in the decision in each of the first two games of the Cambria Classic and has appeared in 10 games. He struck out four batters in three of those outings, including in the Feb. 28 win at Central Arkansas.
Freshman Logan Campbell leads the Jackrabbit bullpen with 11appearances so far this season. Campbell worked twice in the Oral Roberts series, logging a total of 1 1/3 innings in games March 13 and 15. Campbell also made a brief appearance in the March 18 game at Oklahoma State.
Ty Madison has made two appearances in each of the last two weekends. In each case, Madison served as the opener for the Jackrabbits' Friday game, then came back to pitch in relief on Sunday. In all, he pitched a total of eight innings, with his longest outing a four-inning start against Northwestern on March 6 at the Cambria Classic.
SDSU turned three double plays in its March 11 game at Kansas State, marking the first time since a Feb. 24, 2024, game at New Mexico that the Jackrabbits accomplished the feat. The Jacks have 14 double plays to their credit so far this season and are fielding at a .975 clip.
Sophomore center fielder Owen Siegert has hit safely in 11 of the last 12 games, but had a seven-game hitting streak and string of 16 consecutive games reaching base safely end in the March 13 series opener at Oral Roberts. Siegert recently moved into the cleanup spot in the batting order and is batting .298 (14-for-47) during that span.
Nic Werk posted a .900 on-base percentage in the recent mid-week series against Oklahoma State, recording four hits and drawing five walks in his 10 plate appearances. After sitting out the season-opening eight-game road trip to Texas due to injury, Werk has provided a boost to the Jackrabbit offense over the last 13 games, including recording a career-best six-game hitting streak from Feb. 28-March 8. Five of his 14 hits have been doubles and he has three multi-hit games to his credit, including a career-best three-hit performance in the March 18 series finale at Oklahoma State.
A utility player, Werk has made eight starts at second base, three in left field and two at shortstop since his return to the lineup.
Sophomore third baseman Nolan Grawe had his streak of reaching base safely end at 26 games in the March 1 series finale at Central Arkansas. Grawe ended the 2025 season by reaching base in the final 18 games of the year and reached base in the first eight games he played in 2026, including hitting his first home run of the season Feb. 27 to open the UCA series.
Long streaks are nothing new for Grawe, who has had separate hitting streaks of 19 games (2025) and 14 games (last 12 games or 2025 and first two games of 2026) en route to setting an SDSU freshman record with 69 hits in 2025. Grawe currently leads the team with seven doubles.
Sophomore Dayton Franke hit the first Jackrabbit grand slam of the season Feb. 18 at Incarnate Word. It was Franke's second career grand slam.
Franke hit his 11th career home run in his 128th collegiate at-bat at Oral Roberts on March 15, giving the Jackrabbits a momentary 2-1 lead in the series finale. As a freshman in 2025, Franke hit eight home runs in 65 at-bats, including three in one game against Oral Roberts, and has a team-high three home runs in 66 trips to the plate so far this season. Franke also currently leads the team with 14 runs batted in.
Both Franke and Brady Brown were hit by pitches three times in a game last month. Franke was plunked three times in the Feb. 17 series opener at Incarnate Word, while Brown was hit three times in the Feb. 22 series finale at Tarleton State.
In all, Jackrabbit players have been hit by pitches a total of 38 times so far this season. Luke Luskey and Franke lead the team with seven, followed by Carter Taylor with six.
