Jackrabbit football moved into a new stadium in the fall of 2016 with the completion of Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium.
The stadium, which was constructed in phases on the previous Coughlin-Alumni Stadium site, seats approximately 19,300 spectators and cost an estimated $65 million. The stadium is being funded through private gifts and long-term revenue streams, including concessions and suite, loge box and ticket sales. Bonds to finance up to two-thirds of the project’s construction have been secured, with the remaining dollars coming from private support. Lead gifts totaling $12.5 million from Sioux Falls banker Dana Dykhouse and philanthropist T. Denny Sanford were announced in October 2013.
The stadium project was approved by the state Legislature during the 2014 session and signed into law by Gov. Dennis Daugaard. Construction began in the fall of 2014, with the east and south stands completed in August 2015. The remainder of the project was finished in August 2016, with the first game played on Sept. 10, 2016, when the Jackrabbits defeated Drake, 56-28.
The first event at the stadium was the Jacks Bash concert on Sept. 8, 2016, featuring country music artists Lee Brice, Little Big Town and Luke Bryan.
Through the first nine seasons of play, the Jackrabbits have compiled a 61-7 record on their home field, including a 16-1 mark in Football Championship Subdivision playoff games. SDSU enters the 2025 season with a 29-game home winning streak and has completed five undefeated home campaigns at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium.
The stadium attendance record was set on Nov. 4, 2023, when 19,431 fans watched the Jackrabbits defeat North Dakota State, 33-16, in a rematch of the 2022 FCS national championship game.
