OREM, Utah ? Stacey Evans became the fifth Jackrabbit to hit a homerun on Wednesday in the Jackrabbits 5-1 Game 1 win over Utah Valley State, but South Dakota State could not keep pace with the Wolverines in Game 2, and lost 13-5.
The series split sends the Jacks to 8-17 heading into Friday's return to Summit League play at IPFW. UVSC finishes the day with a 5-17 record.
Dani Broshar got the first of 11 Jackrabbits hits, when she hit a one-out single in the second. Brittany Postma did the same, which brought up Kiley Schwedhelm, who smacked a double to centerfield that scored Broshar for a 1-0 SDSU lead.
Evans came up next and cleared the bases with a three-run shot over the fence in right-center field to put the Jacks up 4-0.
Utah Valley got one back in the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Jacks took it right back in the sixth when Schwedhelm singled home Ashley Durazo for the final 5-1 score.
Jenna Marston struck out four and walked just two in the complete game win, which boosted her record to 8-13.
Along with Evans' homer, Schwedhelm went 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBI. Postma also finished 2-for-3 and scored a run. Broshar finished the game 3-for-3 with a run scored.
While Marston held the Wolverines to just five hits in the first game of the day, things changed rapidly in the nightcap, as UVSC pounded out 18 hits in the 13-5 win.
The Jacks started the game hot, scoring three runs in the top of the first.
After Durazo reached on an error and advanced to second on a Jessica Vineyard Sacrifice bunt, Broshar knocked her home with a single to centerfield.
Schwedhelm came up next and drew a walk, but, along with Broshar, scored when Brittany Postma smacked a triple to the corner in left field that put the Jacks on top 3-0.
The Jackrabbit lead quickly vanished when the Wolverines scored five runs on five hits in the home half of the first, three runs on three hits in the second and four runs on four hits and three errors in the third to take a 12-3 lead.
SDSU did score two runs in the top of the fifth, but UVSC scored one in the sixth to end the game via the eight-run rule.
Broshar led the Jackrabbit offense in the nightcap with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate, including a double and two RBI. Postma also recorded a pair of RBI in a 1-for-3 game at the plate.
Marston took the loss to fall to 8-14 on the season.
South Dakota State returns to conference play on Friday at 3 p.m. ET, when the Jackrabbits take on the IPFW Mastodons in a doubleheader in Fort Wayne Ind.
