MACOMB, Ill. — Freshman Courtney Higgins scored midway through the second half, breaking a 1-all tie and lifting South Dakota State to a crucial 2-1 victory Friday afternoon at Western Illinois.
The Jackrabbits, who entered the day tied with Oakland (Mich.) for the fourth and final playoff spot in The Summit League, improved to 3-2 in league play and 6-6-2 overall. WIU dropped to 1-2-1 in The Summit League, 4-6-2 overall.
Higgins' first career goal came in the 70th minute of the match as the freshman from Brookings gathered in a deflected cross from Steph Peterson and beat Leatherneck goalkeeper Laura Atkinson.
SDSU took a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute on an unassisted goal by Illinois native Kayla Braffet – her team-leading fifth goal of the season. Western Illinois tied the match later in the first half on a long free-kick goal by Jennifer Green.
Jackrabbit goalkeeper Brie Rogers made three of her four saves in the second half to preserve the victory and even her record at 3-3-1.
SDSU held a 12-8 advantage in shots, including a 9-3 margin in the second half. The contest was physical throughout as the two teams combined for 25 fouls and six yellow cards — two by SDSU and four by the Leathernecks.
The Jackrabbits close out their road trip Sunday afternoon at IUPUI. Start time is set for 1 p.m. Eastern Time in Indianapolis, Ind.
