The South Dakota State women's soccer team took advantage of the second-half wind, but failed to capitalize as Oakland netted a goal in the second overtime to sneak away with a 1-0 win on a windy and snowy night at Fishback Soccer Park.
Reigning Summit League Offensive Player of the Week Deanna Colarossi beat reigning Summit League Defensive Player of the Week Dani Pappas in the 105th minute of the match, low and to the center of the goal to secure the win. Sarah Lynch assisted on the play.
After a scoreless tie at halftime, snow and wind slammed Fishback Soccer Park, giving the Jacks a strong headwind into their goal in the second half. The Jacks used it to their favor, firing 21 shots to Oakland's two, but failed to find the back of the net.
With the score knotted at 0-0 heading into the first overtime, the Jacks won the toss and again failed to take advantage of the wind, firing eight shots. Christa Nyblom fired back-to-back point-blank shots followed by a Danni Healy close-range shot but Oakland goalkeeper Shannon Coley made three amazing saves to keep the Golden Grizzlies alive.
In the second overtime, Oakland made their second shot of the period count as it found the back of the net, ending the game at 1-0.
Coley gathered 17 saves, including several diving saves to deny the Jacks a goal, improving her record to 3-4 on the season.
Pappas played well in the loss, allowing one goal while making five saves. Her record falls to 3-2-1 on the season.
Kaitlin Justice fired a career-high nine shots to lead the Jackrabbit offense. Amy Trandell led the Grizzlies with four shots.
Oakland improves to 5-6-0 on the season while SDSU falls to 5-5-2.
The Jacks return to the pitch Sunday to face conference foe IPFW at 1 p.m. at Fishback Soccer Park.
