Vermillion, S.D. -- Sophomore Breanna Torkelson broke her own school record in 1-meter diving as the South Dakota State University women's swimming and diving team defeated the University of South Dakota 169-131 on Thursday night.
Torkelson's winning score of 237.59 was 10 points better than her previous school record which she set in her first career diving event last season in Ames, Iowa. Teammate Sasha Porter placed second in the event with 232.80 points.
The night started off with the first of 11 Jackrabbit victories as the team of Jessica Ferley, Katie Budahl, Ashley Valdez and Alexandra Hoffman won the 200 meter relay in 2 minutes, 2.61 seconds. Budahl and Hoffman would not be done as they would each win three individual events.
Budahl finished first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:13.06, first in the 200 breaststroke in 2:36.48 and had a winning time of 5:16.74 in the 400 individual medley. Budahl remains perfect on the season winning all five 200 breaststroke events that she has competed in this season.
Hoffman would go on the place first in the 100 backstroke in 1:08.09, a winning time of 27.65 seconds in the 50 freestyle and a first place finish of 2:29.46 in the 200 backstroke.
Valdez, a sophomore from Eaton, Colo., won her second 100 butterfly event of the season with a time of 1:07.59.
Seniors Christina Gerometta and Rachel Musser would each win their 16th career event as Gerometta set the pace in the 800 freestyle at 9:33.52, while Musser clocked in a 2:29.74 to win the 200 butterfly.
The Jacks (4-4-1) return to the pool this Saturday when they travel to Lincoln to take on Nebraska at 2 p.m.
