The South Dakota State women's soccer team secured their third consecutive Summit League tournament appearance last week with a 1-0 shutout over Oral Roberts and a 8-1 landslide victory over Centenary.
Oakland earned the regular season conference title and the No. 1 seed in the tournament with an undefeated conference record. North Dakota State, Western Illinois and SDSU all finished the regular season with a 6-2-1 record in conference play. NDSU claimed the No. 2 seed by virtue of defeating both SDSU and WIU earlier this season, while SDSU claimed the No. 3 seed based on goal differentials in league contests.
Last season the Jacks shared the regular season conference title with NDSU and IUPUI and earned the No. 1 seed for the tournament. Despite losing the tournament championship to IUPUI, the Jackrabbits are back in the race to the NCAA College Cup berth after graduating only one senior from the 2009 squad.
“The Summit League was very tough this year with many exciting games and I expect the tournament to be the same,” said head coach Lang Wedemeyer. “It is always a unique experience to play in your conference tournament with a berth to the NCAA College Cup on the line. It adds to the drama and to the electricity surrounding the event. Our Athletic Department has done a fantastic job of organizing this weekend and everything will be first class.”
Danni Healy runs ahead of the pack in points on the season with 18 on seven goals and four assists. She tallied a goal and an assist in the win over Centenary last week. Healy sits in third place in the league in points. She also stands in a tie for second in the league in season goals with seven.
Kayla Braffet follows with 13 points on five goals and three assists. She sits in a tie for tenth in the league in points on the season.
Braffet leads the team in shots with 55 and 23 on-goal. Kaitlin Justice follows close behind with 50 shots, including 16 on-goal. Braffet stands at third place in the league in shots this season, while Justice sits in fourth. Justice also stands in fourth in the league in assists with six.
Elisa Stamatakis stands at 11-2-3 and 4-2-1 in league play. She owns eight career shutouts, as well as eight shutouts on the season. Stamatakis leads the league in season shutouts and has the third highest save percentage in the league with .786.
Wedemeyer's 100th win –The win over Centenary marked head coach Lang Wedemeyer's 100th career win, as well as the 100th win for the Jackrabbit women's soccer program. Wedemeyer's career record stands at 100-82-23.
“It's hard to believe that I have been coaching at South Dakota State for almost 11 years now. I have been blessed to work with great people, coach fantastic student-athletes and have a wonderful quality of life,” said Wedemeyer. “The win total is a culmination of all the efforts of the many players who have passed through this program and the wonderful support they received over the years that has created a quality student-athlete experience.”
Wedemeyer built the SDSU women's soccer program from the ground up. He started the NCAA Division II program in 2000 and led the team through a transition to Divison I, as well a 15-5-1 record in their first year of eligibility for Division I postseason play in 2008. The Jacks earned The Summit League's regular season title as well as the conference tournament, earning a trip to the NCAA College Cup. Wedemeyer's 14th-seeded team beat the nationallly ranked Colorado 1-0 in the first round of the Cup. The win marked the first NCAA postseason victory for SDSU in the D-I era and was the first time a team from The Summit League won a game at the Cup.
Wedemeyer led the Jackrabbits to qualify for three-straight Summit League tournaments, the only team to accomplish this since the Jacks joined the conference in 2007. He looks to lead the Jacks to a Summit League championship this weekend and back to the College Cup.
This week's Competition
North Dakota State – The Jacks go head-to-head with the Bison for the second time this season in the semi-finals of The Summit League tournament.
The Jacks fell to the Bison 2-1 Oct. 23 and were outshot 14-11, including 9-6 on-goal. Elisa Stamatakis garnered seven saves against the Bison.
Candice D'Arcangeli scored the first goal of the game to give the Bison an early lead. Cori Bonte scored the equalizer in the 73rd minute off a deflection from the top of the box to tie the game. The Jacks couldn't hang on to the tie and, in the 84th minute, Quin Ryan tapped in a cross to give the Bison the win.
Ryan and Brooklyn Dyce lead the Bison in goals on the season. Goalkeeper Kalani Bertsch allowed 13 goals this season but tallied 41 saves and three shutouts. Abbey Stratton leads the league in assists with seven on the season. She shares the tie with Julianne Boyle and Dani Haelewyn of Oakland.
NDSU's Marissa Wolfgram captured the Summit League Defensive Player of the Week Nov. 1 after leading the Bison to a pair of wins over Centenary and Oral Roberts last week and securing the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. She assisted on a goal against ORU, as well as scored the gaming-winning goal on a penalty kick against ORU. She held ORU's leading scoring from tallying a single shot.
Last season the Bison, Jacks and IUPUI ended the regular season in a three-way tie for the regular season title. According to tie-breaker policies, North Dakota State claimed the No. 3 seed in the tournament and faced IUPUI in the semi-finals. IUPUI defeated the Bison 1-0 and IUPUI went on to defeat the Jacks 4-1 in the championship game, earning the College Cup berth.
Rabbits in the Record Books – Danni Healy broke into the top-five career points list for SDSU last week against Centenary when she tallied a goal and assist for three points. She now has 48 points on her career, which is fifth best in school history. Healy is also fourth in career assists with 12 and tied for fourth in game-winners with seven on her career. She shares the tie with teammate Kaitlin Justice.
Kayla Braffet makes her way up the all-time assists list for SDSU. Braffet started the season in sixth place and moved up the list to third with 13 career assists. She needs three more assists on her career to tie the second place record and five more to have the most career assists in Jackrabbit history.
Freshman Elisa Stamatakis made her mark on Jackrabbit soccer early in her collegiate career. Stamatakis stands in a tie for third place all-time with eight total shutouts on her career. She is also in third for most career wins with 11.
Stamatakis tallied four-straight shutouts in her first five games as a Jackrabbit. The streak is a tie for second most consecutive shutouts in Jackrabbit history. Former goalkeeper Nicole Lograsso recorded four in 2007. Lograsso is also in first with eight consecutive shutouts recorded in 2008.
