SDSU GEARS UP FOR EXHIBITION CONTESTS

The South Dakota State soccer team gets its 2026 campaign started with a pair of exhibition matches in the Twin Cities area this week.Â
Â
SDSU will first face Green Bay in a neutral-site meeting on Thursday at noon in Blaine, Minn. The Jackrabbits and Phoenix square off at the National Sports Center on Field 50. South Dakota State then takes on the Golden Gophers at Minnesota's Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium on Saturday beginning at 6 p.m. in St. Paul. Neither matchup will have a live stream or live stats available. Â

The timeline prior to this season has been one that has featured a gradual progression compared to previous years. This year's squad reported two weeks earlier to campus than years past, allowing for more time to get familiarized with the day-to-day operations in the program.

"The acclimation period has been a real positive for us," SDSU head coach Brock Thompson said. "One to connect off the field, but also to slowly ramp up into the pace we want to play at. We're never a finish product in August. It's allowed us I think to have more quality moments in training just having that additional time to get going."

The 2026 roster features nine newcomers to the program. The group of newcomers consists of six freshmen to go along with three student-athletes with previous college experience.Â

"It's been incredibly healthy for the new players," Thompson said of the new acclimation period. "There haven't been as many firehose moments where they're having to take it all in. There have been moments that's allowed more retention of information and has certainly helped them have more time to connect with their teammates, the campus and in the community."

Both exhibitions provide the Jackrabbits an opportunity to compete against quality competition prior to the season. Green Bay made a Horizon League Championship appearance a season ago while Minnesota has been a solid contender in the Big Ten Conference.Â

"I think any time we travel it is a great opportunity for us to be together," Thompson said. "For us to take the next step as a team, we have to play different teams that will play different ways, that will create problems that we will have a harder time replicating at a higher level because they play different shapes or styles. That makes these two games very beneficial."

South Dakota State will officially begin its 2026 season in Brookings at Fishback Soccer Park. The Jackrabbits, coming off their third consecutive Summit League Tournament title, host Manitoba in their season opener at 7 p.m.
