Former North Central Conference and future Summit League rivals South Dakota State and South Dakota softball teams played for the first time in nearly six years on Thursday, when they got together for a nonconference doubleheader at Jackrabbit Softball Stadium, and they did not disappoint the 104 fans in attendance
SDSU scored three late runs to win the opener 5-2 and walked-off with a 2-1, eight inning win in the nightcap to boost its record to 12-26 on the season. The Coyotes fall to 12-25-1.
Tied at two heading into the sixth, the Jacks scored three runs on three hits and one USD error to take a 5-2 lead and secure Pam Nicholson's second win of the season.
Nicholson gave up six hits and two runs in the complete game win, she also set a career-high with nine strikeouts compared to just one walk.
Nicholson, along with Ashley Durazo and Krista Honken all finished with two hits in the win. Honken finished with one RBI, while Lunn knocked in two. Devon Reick went 1-for-1 in the win, with a pair of walks and an RBI.
The runs didn't come nearly as easy in Game 2. The Jacks first run came on a three base throwing error in the bottom of the first, but the SDSU lead didn't last long, as the Coyotes tied the game with an unearned run of their own in the top of the second.
The score stayed the same until the Jacks finally broke through in the bottom of the eighth inning, when the Jacks loaded the bases with one out for Dani Broshar, who hit a bouncer to third. Nicholson dashed home and scored the game-ending run when the catcher dropped the ball.
Durazo led the Jacks in Game 2 with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate. Reick, Nicholson and Game 2 starter Kori Seidlitz picked-up the Jacks other three hits.
Seidlitz gave up seven hits over the eight-inning affair, striking out five and walking three in the win, which improves her record to 10-14.
The Jackrabbits return to Summit League play on Saturday, when they host IUPUI in a doubleheader at noon.
