The South Dakota State softball team pounded out 12 hits in both games of a doubleheader sweep of IUPUI on Saturday as the Jackrabbits downed the Jaguars 6-4 in the opener and 9-5 in the nightcap.
The Jackrabbits improve to 14-26 overall with the sweep, 6-5 in The Summit League, while the Jaguars fall to 10-32 overall, 7-10 in league play.
The Jacks scored first in the opener, when Dani Broshar capitalized on a wild pitch to score from third for a 1-0 SDSU lead.
SDSU added a single run in the third on an RBI double by Broshar that scored Devon Reick to push the margin to 2-0.
Krista Honken blasted her third homerun of the season to open the Jackrabbit half of the fourth, her laser shot over the centerfield fence pushed the lead to 3-0.
IUPUI got back into the game with three runs in the fifth to tie the game at 3-3, but the Jacks retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth, when Honken plated with a Kelsey Lunn with an RBI single up the middle to put the Jacks back on top for good at 4-3.
Ashley Durazo provided the insurance for SDSU in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run homerun over the fence in centerfield that put the Jacks up 6-3.
The Jags added one run in the seventh, but Jackrabbit starter Pam Nicholson struck out the potential tying run to end the game.
Broshar finished the first game three hits in four trips to the plate, including a double and an RBI. Durazo finished 1-for-4 with her first homer of the season and two RBI. Honken went 2-for-3 with a homerun and two RBI.
Nicholson picked-up her second win in as many starts to boost her record to 3-12. She gave up eight hits in the complete game win, with seven strikeouts and three walks.
The Jacks hot hitting carried over to Game 2, but SDSU scored its first two runs of the game with just one hit and three IUPUI errors in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead.
Three hits followed in the second inning, but resulted in just one run on a Broshar RBI single to put the Jacks up 3-0.
The hits came early and often in the Jackrabbit half of the third, as the Jacks batted around, scoring five runs on four hits to take a commanding 8-0 lead.
SDSU starter Kori Seidlitz entered the top of the fourth with an 8-0 lead and a perfect game, but it didn't last. IUPUI scored four runs on four hits and three SDSU errors to half the SDSU lead to 8-4 when the inning came to a merciful end with the bases loaded.
Both pitchers settled down after that, as did both defenses, and each team scored one more run over the next two and a half innings, resulting in a 9-5 SDSU win.
Seidlitz tied a career-high with nine strikeouts in the complete game win. She gave up nine hits with a pair of walks in the win, which improves her record to 11-14.
Broshar again led the offense with a 2-for-3 game at the plate with four RBI. Durazo also went 2-for-3 and added an RBI.
The Jackrabbits look to complete the series sweep and remain undefeated all-time against the Jaguars on Sunday at noon at Jackrabbit Softball Stadium.
