The South Dakota State Equestrian team hosted Auburn on Saturday at the DeHaan Equestrian Center and gave the top-ranked Tigers a good run, but came up on the short end of an 11-5 contest.
"I'm so proud of our riders, we hung with the national champions and got some points, which speaks highly of our riders," SDSU Assistant Coach Kamerra Brown said. "This was a good confidence booster for our riders to compete against Delaware State tomorrow."
The loss drops the Jackrabbits to 1-3-1 on the season. Auburn, who also defeated Delaware State 13-3 on Saturday, improves to 6-0.
SDSU split the points in equitation over fences, with Meredith Sauer and Santana Wright scoring points, Sauer with a score of 86 and Wright with an 83. The Jacks also split the points in reining, where Helen Lauth carded a 71 and Maggie Holzworth a 68.
Kelsey Champagne earned a point for the Jacks with a 67 in horsemanship for the only other point of the day.
The Jackrabbits close out Hobo Day Weekend on Sunday, when they square off with Delaware State in the DeHaan Equestrian Center at 8 a.m.
